Was he right waldunchads? Are we just reading too much and not living our lives as we should be?
How can you refute that?

>A decade from now academics will still be debating who got it right: Orwell or Huxley. Waldunchads will sit in the back of the lecture halls with a slight smirk on their face. They're still debating this...even after all these years? Heh. They'll get up and move slowly to the door. As a cool wind blows through the campus they'll put their earbuds in and adjust their collar. Slyly, they'll drop a copy of L'Academie onto the ground. It's not rubbish--but it will surely be picked up...eventually.

I think Tolstoy said that your 20s and 30s should be spent living to the fullest, for you have the rest of your life to read books afterwards. I have a similar problem. I'm in my early 20s and didn't read much previously. I'm miles behind the most of this board in terms of being well-read and I feel like I will never catch up, given how slow I read and how fast my reading list is growing. The scope of reading I have to do just to catch up to well-read people my age is disheartening and terrifying. Is suicide the only option?

Reading is not the same as reading.

This is why you always here retards bragging I "read 400 books in the last year".

It all depends about your accumulation of knowledge. One book can give you more knowledge than 1000, depending on its content and how you learn it.

"Reading" just means you have a book opened. That's it. If you say "reading is a waste of time", then you don't accumulate knowledge.

Here are a few rules where you will never waste your time with books
>read books that help your for your job/study
You can never waste your time with those books. If it's for work, it's always a good time investment.
>read books with a passion
Larpers aside, being very passionate in certain books is amazing. But remember, passion and addiction are something completely different. Passion means you are engaged with this book an you try to improve through this book. Addiction means you use this book as a way to escape reality and actually harm yourself more than it help.
>read literature ABOVE YOUR LEVEL
This is the biggest mistake most people make. They think reading means relaxing. It's the exact opposite. Reading means improving. For example never read a book about a politician or entertainer. They are a waste of time because you don't improve in anything. Read literature that is seen as a challenge (but be careful with books that are written in a strange way. Everything that is not considered a "normal" text can actually do more harm than help. For example Shakespeare's books were written for stage play. Reading those books has always the bad taste of missing certain things and filling those on your own can actually be much worse than just reading a "normal" book)
>books are not books
And this is the best advice for new reader (if you are this retarded and think reading can be a waste of time, you are a new reader): read FAMOUSE BOOKS with a god tier reputation in the scientific community. For example the books of Plato or "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". Those are just examples, but if you read books which are generally considered god tier, you will not only never waste your time, but as a new reader you get a feeling of what a "good book" actually is.
