Does anyone else ever read old stuff your younger self wrote and get jealous of how effortlessly creative you used to be?

I am more creative now than back then but I am completely spent on motivation and belief. I used to think that I'd find a path if I kept believing in what was right and preserved my integrity. Eventually it felt like trying to dig a path through concrete with my teeth while others would just pay the toll and climb the ladder.

Things I wrote and drew as a kid were very derivative. I can recognize it more now than back then.

This 100%. Went through some of the stuff I wrote in my teens (which impressed my social circle back then) and all of it is painfully derivative juvenile cringe. Now, a decade later, the creative process is much slower but it has somewhat unique voice. Unfortunately, I have no social circle to impress anymore.

Everything is derivative. Good writers are just learn how to hide their influences.

Hmmm...Not sure. Some friends told me they liked my stuff, but does that really count?

Years ago I kinda befriended an older, wealthy, cultivated woman on the internet, and she liked my stuff, too.

I haven't written in years, no idea when was the last time.

My juvenile writing has a very strong voice with effortless style, while my adult efforts are significantly more original and creative.

The main difference is that the plagiarist isn't well read enough to have more than a handful of authors to take ideas from.
