If it is the author's job to know the world of their story before writing, then how was he able to write 500 stories? Do you think he put the work in?

You only need to know enough of the world to create a believable portrait for the reader. Nobody cares about the history of economics in your far future space opera unless it is directly related to the story you're telling.

Speculating about the consequences of an idea or a technology was baked into the process of story-telling for Asimov. The work was winging it at the typewriter, almost like a musician improvising on a theme at the keyboard. He was very consistent in describing his process as such.
