It's not that odd. Lovecraft enjoyed adventure fiction like Tarzan. Howard enjoyed horror but his horror stories are mostly more action-horror than Lovecraft's. Both of them had themes of distant prehistory. Both of them dabbled in poetry.

Tolkien is to creative literary genius what Martin is to hack pulp idiocy. It is only reflected in the awfulness of the one that we can fully see the goodness of the other.
