It feels very sad today bros. Please share something interesting, or let's talk about the book you're currently reading.

It'll be okay my friend. I'm reading too many books right now. Two books about writing, but I'm also half way through an absolute tome about the history of Ireland and I've just started Hyperion (although I'm not much of a sci-fi guy and don't normally like reading series of books).

What are you reading?

i've been feeling sad too recently. the birdposting anon in the other thread cheered me up a bit though. it would be nice to enjoy the little things more

Heres a funny excerpt from a book im reading about Rasputin

That's a lot, what made you read Hyperion if you're not that into sci-fi? I hope uou're having fun reading nonetheless

Only two books for me. Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals and Rachel Cusk's Outline Trilogy which I will be finishing tonight, it's only about 170 pages. Then I'll figure out which works of her do I read next

Actually in hindsight maybe "funny" is the wrong word

hope things get better for you sadfren
it's all very hard for me rn but i think it'll be ok
i just gotta grit my teeth and bear it for a few days, maybe a week, and things can start improving
i'm rereading notes from the underground rn. it's one of the first works of actual literary fiction i can remember reading, so it's neat coming back to it from my current perspective

wtf anon that wasn't very funny at all

Yeah my bad. I do this somewhat frequently.

A few weeks ago I was telling someone about Batavia's Graveyard and I also described it as "funny" "it's a funny book haha". But then as I was describing it to them it dawned on me that it was only like 1 or 2 lines towards the end that were funny, and that I may have somewhat misrepresented the subject matter.

Serious question :
Is the vast majority of people deeply depressed? Everybody I know seems to live a completely meaningless life. They looks ok on the outside but if I were them I wouldn’t find the force to get out of bed. It seems like life for just about everyone consist in witnessing your hopes and dreams slowly fades away, and trying to forget about it by indulging in increasingly idiotic pastime, until death mercifully picks you up.

I don't know really. Thought I'd try out the genre!

I've never really got into philosophy. It's very difficult for me. What's the outline trilogy about?

i just read the adversary by emmanuel carrere
true crime book about this french doctor who murdered his whole family and it turns out he wasn't really a doctor, he'd just been pretending to be one for 18 years and his entire life was an ever escalating series of lies
very interesting and really well written

I’m about to graduate with an engineering degree and I feel like I’ve wasted my time. All the work in my state is in power, which I’m not interested in very much. Wish I would have studied what I actually wanted to do I could get a comfy WFH software job and read as much as I work.

On the bright side, I’m finishing a book about Jung’s interpretation of dreams and it’s been really fun. I’ve been keeping a dream journal and looking out for associations, compensations, and projections; I don’t really know what I’m doing but is comfy :)

Wow I just read the dudes wiki article. That's outrageous. I'll probably be picking up the book, I love stories of narcissists snapping and running amok. Reminds me of Jamison Bachman the failed lawyer who started answering roommate ads, destroying the homes, terrorizing the occupants, and then using bizarre legal arguments to basically squat without paying rent. Eventually he blew a fuse and killed someone too

Im reading through a complete collection of Yeats and Shogun. Shogun is fun and engaging but I feel like I'm kind of wasting my time. It doesn't evoke anything within me, it's just petty thrills so far but I've heard it gets really good later on. The Yeats collection is great though. My favorite poem so far has been "The two trees" but I've loved at least two dozen poems out of the 70 or so I've read so far.

I've been reading about Burmese history lately, specifically "A History of Myanmar Since Ancient Times". I wanted to visit the country to see the ruins of Bagan/Pagan, an ancient capital of theirs before the coof and new civil conflict hit. So this serves as a substitute for that, I guess.
Also reading some Lovecraft, to keep with the spooky autumn spirit. Living on a coast helps immerse myself in that.

i only mean to say that you might be onto something. i think this has something to do with the way modern technology provides us all our basic needs, rendering our most deeply rooted goals (food, water, shelter, etc.) trivial non-issues. this makes us feel powerless, so we invent artificial goals to fill the void, leading to feelings of meaninglessness in our lives and such. i'm just paraphrasing kaczyinski, so if you haven't already and this interests you, read ISAIF

Currently I am reading the Game of Thrones series again, and tommorow I will order The Lightning and the Sun.

I somehow became obsessed with reading the diaries of Japanese noblewomen who dies a thousand years ago. They are a combination of funny and sad. Women who spen their whole lives barely moving, trapped by complex social obligations and a crazy labyrinth of religious taboos, writing poetry and trying to keep up appearances. You should give them a try.

Just the opposite for me. I have three lifetimes worth of things that I want to accomplish and everything seem to be a three steps forward and two steps back process. I'm juggling too many things and not getting as far as I'd like as fast as I'd like in any of them.
