I've yet to hear an explanation for its popularity that isn't just "wish-fulfilment for losers". Someone smart give me your hot take.

It's part pornographic part cute, simple as. Whereas american cartoons were visually neutered to be suitable for children, anime (and accompanying hentai) started making strides when they started portraying humans with realistic proportions (or sensually exaggerated like huge eyes) in tantalising clothing. When the characters aren't being sexualized they're given 'moe' treatment, giving them characteristics you typically associate with small children and household pets - cute voices, big sparky eyes, cat ears, emotive faces, chibified bodies. Wait why is this literature again?

Beautiful Fighting Girl. You'll want to ignore the translator's introduction tacked on by the University of Minnesota. They are trying to make sexual attraction to 2D blue haired women palatable to 3D blue haired women for sales purposes.

It's a shonen, target audience are boys aged 12-16. In the West shonens are usually consumed by blacks and women who sport similar intelligence levels. To be fair, seinen or "mature" anime is literally the same just with added gore and tits

This is off-topic but impossible to discuss on /a/, so

The majority of seasonal anime is essentially advertising for IPs (light novels, manga) that are already popular. That's how the publishing companies see it - and to them, these IPs are more or less interchangable. Whatever series they own which gets the one-cour 13 episode season often changes at the last minute because the subject matter is irrelevant, all that matters is that one or two of their properties are being advertised with anime & taking up air time during a particular season. It is not produced for people who enjoy or care about animation as an art form, it's schlock for fanatics.

Your stance on anime is basically equivalent to equating Marvel movies with cinema as a whole. Whether or not you're justifed in condemning the anime industry as a whole is up for debate, but no one - apart from the type of fanatics that populate /a/ - really believes that the garbage that gets churned out every year has any artistic merit.

So all anime is wish-fulfillment? And what exempts other forms of escapism?
