Actually read it twice when very young so it's a little hazy in my memory
Essentially what Graves intends to do is to answer a series of mythological questions formerly thought unanswerable, for instance the girl-name Achilles assumed when hiding among the daughters of Lycomedes (on some Greek island) to avoid having to participate in the Trojan War (not his but his mother Thetis' plan, who has foreknowledge of his fate should he do so). The answering of this series of questions presumes the existence of a religion (that of the White Goddess) long since forgotten but available to the sleuth that Graves purports to be.
As the book continues the idea becomes more and more plausible.
Of course memory's a funny thing so corrections are of course welcome. This is merely what first comes to mind

Haven't read The White Goddess but I jerked off to Robert Grave's version of the Golden Ass multiple times. Especially liked the part where Lucius's girlfriend asks him to 'make love to her like a greek boy'. The bestiality scene was pretty hot too.
