I loved Blood Meridian. Read it years ago, which of McCarthy's works should I read next?

Arguably his poorest work.

Suttree, Blood Meridian or The Crossing
All the Pretty Horses is not as good, but also acceptable.

Border trilogy
Suttree

Outer Dark is my second favorite novel of his that I’ve read so far but The Orchard Keeper might take its place eventually.
In terms of critical consensus Suttree and The Road are his next most highly regarded though.
Any of you guys ever listen to the Reading McCarthy podcast?

This is over wrought. I'm glad he learned to restrain himself. It's why i think the Road is his second best book. It's really sparse writing yet great.

It's satire. The whole italics section is satire.
That sounds good though, even if overwrought.

source? Is there any secondary lit on this?

Ulysses in knoxville by Rick wallach
It's satirizing Agee's death in the family, which was the OG knoxville novel before Suttree came along.

Thanks. Are you researching this or do you just read a lot? It seems you know the text very well.

Cope. Agee is leagues better of a writer than McCarthy. Faggot can’t satirize shit.

A McCarthy thread not yet taken over by chuds (including that "muh mccarthyfag" retard who destroys all discussion with his "because i don't like him" tier excuses)? Nice.
Sparks of Blood meridian are visible in Outer dark. It definitely has that similar 'moving through nightmare' feel, perhaps even more dreamlike.
Next I would read The Border trilogy. Very different from BM, but is set in the west and it's good to see McCarthy write a very philosophically strong trilogy in a sombre, nostalgic tone; probably his least violent work, also his most lovable characters (but still very minimal as is usual for him).

>> No.19302432

Sutree or Outer Dark, then maybe the boarder trilogy. Skip everything else and maybe read his next book if he even puts another one out, it's been a while now and I have my doubts.

Nope.

No one's mentioned Child of God, is it not highly regarded? I read that Bloom listed it in his canon along with BM and Suttree.

I'm reading it now after Outer Dark and not enjoying it as much, but I feel like it will get darker and more depraved as it goes on

Child of God is just As I Lay Dying but for edgy teenage boys who don't have the attention span to read Faulkner yet. It's worth reading once, but it's not like McCarthy's other works which can be read over and over again (Suttree and Blood Meridian).

I loved Outer Dark until I read Blood Meridian and Faulkner's major novels. Now I'd just rather re-read Blood Meridian or re-read Light in August.

I still rate Outer Dark fairly high, even after reading them. I liked it a lot better than Light in August certainly.

Wow. What a constructive contribution to a discussion of literature on the internet. Go read Child of God since you're clearly its intended audience.

Without his beautiful prose all you have left is the narrative, which is essentially identical throughout every one of his works
>Life is sad boo hoo, do it anyway because you have to though
The Road was a slog and his worst work.
