No, he was still under the thrall of an unrealistic, Christian or, at best, Grecian conception of "happiness" (felicitá, eudaimonia).
The titans of modern scientific thought had not yes been born, or hadn't begun to publish their work.
He had no chance of reading Feuerbach, Stirner, Darwin or Dawkins and be enlightened by them.
Happiness is being "euphoric in the moment" as the old adage goes, not because of some phony god, but by one's own thoughts (gioia).

"Happyness" is just a chemical reaponse in your brain. Contentment can only be achieved if you have a purpose I.E. believe in something greater or 'greatness' in itself; hence, you get things like metaphysics and idealism but even just simple thngs like having a family.
