>1. When you find yourself, in a morning, averse to rise, have this thought at hand: I arise to the proper business of a man: And shall I be averse to set about that work for which I was born, and for which I was brought into the universe?

Having middle class wealth is actually better in the third world. I've lived with family for awhile in a third world country. They had a farm, workers, maids, a big house, etc. In the US, they live like the average American.

he was talking about why the fuck an emperor should even get out of bed in the morning you cerebrally poisoned fuck.

>heh, if i was an emperor who could eat grapes, i would never have an ounce of introspection and never read philosophy or give a hoot about the million fags trying to stab me in the back or the intrigue and failures of being a politician or care about anything, i would just be a chad who thought things like "live laugh love" all day and get on my sigma grindset

the fact that an emperor will never face the horrific suffering of the peasants is immaterial. there are a million and one ways to fuck yourself over and end up doing something retarded or becoming a nihilist even if you are well off, he does not concern himself with other people in his diary because again it is his fucking diary.

>Soon you'll be ashes, or bones. A mere name, at most - and even that is just a sound, an echo. The things we want in life are empty, stale, and trivial. Why are you still here? Sensory objects are sifting and unstable, our senses dim and easily deceived the soul itself, a decoction of the blood; fame in a world like this is worthless. - And so? Wait for it patiently - annihilation or metamorphosis. - And until that time comes - what? Honour and revere the gods, treat human beings as they deserve, be tolerant with others and strict with yourself. Remember, nothing belongs to you but your flesh and blood - and nothing else is under your control.

>Emperor was right. But so were Epicureans.
The ethics are very similar, just with the cart and horse flipped. The Stoics thought that happiness was a byproduct of virtue, but that virtue was the end goal. The Epicureans thought that happiness was the end goal and that virtue was the best way to get it. Most Roman criticism of Epicureanism was due to hedonists claiming to be Epicurean while practicing the sort of hedonism that Epicurus himself opposed, hence Seneca denouncing Epicureans while praising Epicurus. Stoicism and Epicureanism of course had very different metaphysics, but who the fuck cares if it doesn't matter anyway.
