I honestly hate vintage classics, the orange colour is awful but I went to the two bookstores in my city and that was the only edition available unfortunately. It's my first Faulkner book though, how are you liking light in august? Some anons told me to start with as i lay dying and I might read another Faulkner after.

It's brilliant. Again his prose is the highlight for me, I'm just so in awe about it. But the story is also very engaging and unlike some of his other stuff it's more accessible due to the linear timeline and neutral narrator. The sound and the fury is still my favorite though. I've also read as i lay dying which I liked a lot, it's kind of like the essential elements of Faulkner's writings packed into a short little story so it serves as a great entry point (though I read tsatf first).

it may not be a big deal at first but those few bucks amount to something in the long run. Let's say you buy 10 brand new books a month, $10 each, that's $100. If you bought them used you'd have likely saved roughly $50. That's not "nothing".

Depending on your country tracking down a used book and getting someone to ship it to you is not worth the effort of something that only costs around $10 at max. Not where I live I literally never see those books for sale unless they were prescribed reading for students I don't see them on any second hand website or store and shipping from ebay would pretty much bring them up to the cost of a new book if I wanted to go outside my local area. Cannon books sell for like $3 brand new from Wordsworth almost always regardless of size, not worth tracking down a used copy. If you want a nicer copy shelling out up to $10 isn't that crazy.
A few extra monies for a fresh book is worth it if you receive a shitty used copy from some random seller. If I buy books I like to keep them in good condition for the most part. If I didn't care about reading them over and over again and displaying them I would just use my library or a kindle. Unless I can find someone selling something nearby it's not worth the fuel or shipping costs to get the book a little cheaper.

If I lived somewhere where I could constantly hunt for deals on books I would, it's fun and I am a pretty frugal person. It's just not logistically worth my time when they only cost a little bit of money to begin with or could end up on sale brand new somewhere

I think it is not as bad as most of the reviews say, but probably i was lucky. The quality of the print is poor if you compare it with the Don quijote edition and the binding is pretty similar in both editions. What I truly hated of that Borges edition were the essays written by pretentious faggots about Borges, but it is less than 100 pages I guess. Overall is a good book, I would recommend it.

I read it in like a year. Took a break between part I and part II though. And sometimes I read an entire different book between chapters. It's not difficult but there's not really any accumulative story in it or anything to look forward to. So you get what you read moment by moment. Its definitely a great book, I doubt there's any relevant topic left untouched, there's history, ethics, theology, religion, poetry, myth, love, etc, etc. Also it's very easy to read things in more than one way, there's a quote from Nabokov that says that Cervantes was cruel, and seen from a modern perspective (don't know if it was this way in the past) it has some truth to it. All in all I'd say it is exhausting but rewarding.

Seeing some actual variety in this thread for the first time in a good while gives me some hope, but the catalog is not exactly reassuring. The last time I looked in a stack thread almost every stack was primarily Melville, McCarthy and Dostoevsky, and everyone was talking about which editions had the best covers.

I did read the first 20 pages or so when it arrived just to get a taste, the premise and the style are solid, should be good. Probably will be a month or so before I read it in earnest, there are a few books ahead of it.
