I read a lot of 40k, it's generally good, but not ground breaking writing. Maybe that's why it's popular. It's very average.

I re-read Dune recently and noticed that the pacing is really jarring. Also, Herbert skips over big chunks of time for seemingly no reason, kills off major characters suddenly and other weird plot points. Any other anon's find this? How is Bakker so good with naming conventions, bros? Most fantasy writers are lucky to get a few punchy, memorable fictional terms in their work, but Bakker's entire lore is filled with morphology that feels just right. Took me a while to realise that glyphs added to the letters aren't just for weirdness sake but a functional carriers of the name's root history.

I read it nigh on 15 years ago. It's a very slow series in the vein of Tolkienist adventure. Tad Williams' general style is a very gradual build up to a final conflict where most of the plot threads are resolved in rapid succession. During the gradual build up there's usually a lot of travel (again, the Tolkien influence) and exploring the mysteries of his setting. He's big into fairy tales and mythology, so fairies and myths always feature heavily in his books. I would say that Osten Ard, the world of Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, is his weakest setting. My favorite is Shadowmarch. It's still very derivative of real world cultures and mythologies, but he's taken more of an effort to give them a good scramble, whereas Osten Ard feels very much like Europe by another name, compressed to about a third of its real size. The thing I like most about Shadowmarch is the mythology, the fact that there's three different versions of the "Theomachy" (god war) recorded in holy books, and the gods all have different names in the different traditions, so untangling that and making sense of the past was part of the fun of it. That's in the background though. The foreground has lots of warfare, conspiracies, political intrigue, and so on. In true Tad Williams style though he goes very slowly, building stuff up then gradually bringing things to a head. He's a little better with interspersing climaxes in the books though, and I think his pacing is a little more brisk in Shadowmarch. But "brisk" for Williams is still very slow by modern fantasy author standards.

Over a decade of trying to recommend Tad Williams to people has taught me that I have to preface my recommendations with warnings about the languid pacing of his books. Modern fantasy has conditioned them for quick, snappy plots that rapidly jump between perspectives and locations. Not really Williams' style. Because most authors don't ever get that big. And its generally assume they at the very least, have an outline of the ending finish. Something Martin did had in the beginning, but threw it all away because he didn't like the idea of a time skip of 3-5 years. I think its why Arya's preview chapter was a bit risqué.

I'm fairly new to Brain Sanderson's works and I've only just finished reading The Final Empire. I thought the plot dragged on for so long at some points. The pacing felt really off. Also I feel like he cant write romance for shit, the Elend-Vin relationship was so shit.
Is it worth continuing the series? I've heard that the second book is not that great but Hero of Ages makes it worth it. If its not worth continuing is "The Farseer" books worth a read?
