I don't know him so I'll just use YAtwitter as an example.
They only ever read the same formulaic trash. Their way of doing things differently is keeping the overal structure, themes, whatever the same except the MC may be dark-skinned or has curly hair, something like that.
How would they have any understanding if they never read anything else?

They might have 500 books on their Goodreads/GRequivalent, but it's maybe 2 or 3 distinct stories in reality.
So no, zero understanding.

Who are you even trying to criticise?
Obviously in Genre Fantasy you are going to need some antagonist who brings stakes to the story. But you are right in that whatever or whoever is evil requires a logical reason for his/her/its actions, which is often found in a traumatic past or a fault in one's character.

Apparently all Kellhus' childen are hapa retards. Maybe breeding a post-wall brown prostitute wasn't such a brilliant idea after all. Why didn't he just to back to Ishual and find himself a pvre dvnyain maiden?

>> No.19247757

He was never meant to back to Ishual, he wouldn't contaminate Ishual with his presence, which would expose the Dunyain. Btw wait till you read about those "maidens" lmao, wont spoil it to you.

Most wordly women couldnt even reproduce with dunyain men. Esmenet is special because she can actually breed with Kellhus.

Half Dunyains are really fucked anyways, none of the children are really mentally stable except maybe for Serwe and Kauytas who are both better functioning that the rest of his children.

The thing is, the Dunyains are strong in intellect and weak in spirit. They are prone to demonic posession and going mental.

Nice quads.

Its not about the chosen story archetype, no story is unique and its mostly about the execution.

Modern YA will present you a blank slate character everyone can identify with and this character will face mostly the same traumas, same enemies and have very similar stories to go with all the other similarities. Add to that the current trend of making hard magic systems and everyone taking advice from Brando Sando whe soup is ready, and it tastes bland every time.

YA is a shit genre anyway as you cant explore some of the more adult themes and because the only vocabulary the new readers know is "cool" you really cant write in any intellectually meaningful way.

Sci-fi has been jewed to hell and gone since the 60s. Something is only a (((classic))) if it made a shitload of money for the publisher at the time or trailblazed a certain social agenda. Imagine fantasy if Terry Brooks and Marion Zimmer Bradley were the only two authors most people knew about.

No, it's quite creative. That's the only thing a lot of it has going for it. Interesting ideas that are written about in books that utterly fail on the level of characters and drama. It's something that makes it similar to fantasy, where you have books that are primarily about world-building and fail at everything that would make it a good story.

> It’s a problem our society has with bringing meaning and feeling to the things that are revealed to us by scientific research. I mean, where is it written that everything in the universe is supposed to make sense to the human sensorium? It doesn’t. A lot of important stuff goes on that we can’t see. We can’t sense it with our bodies. Our bodies are not the measure of everything. You don’t feel quanta breaking down, you don’t feel the galaxy rotating. It’s difficult to describe that. It’s difficult even to intellectualize it. It’s especially difficult to have it make some kind of sentimental sense in a tribal, storytelling structure, which are mostly myths about who we are, where we came from and why we're special. I think that’s where science fiction derives a lot of its energy. It’s from that aspect that can’t be tamed. It’s from the aspect of things that are very, very resistant to being treated as mythos or in story form. I’ve made this argument many times. But people just sort of trip over the truth, dust themselves off, and move on as best they can.

>I'll go farther: if there is a moment when that problem is worked out successfully, science fiction will cease to exist. There won't be social need for it. It'll be a very different culture than our own. It might even be a form of organization that is not cultural. Or post-cultural. Post-humans in a post-cultural situation, and that’s not our lookout.

Realistically it's the literary equivalent of a Naruto and Avengers crossover fanfic. It's definitely not great but it has fun characters and some great HYPE moments. On the other hand, it's also severely let down by the limits of the author. The events of the series are only kicked off by a literal deus ex machina from out of nowhere and it takes a few books before the series seems to understand what its actually doing. Books 3-8 are basically a Marvel movie in an extremely high fantasy world with cities on clouds and magitech research facilities which is neat, but the really high level stuff like battles between gods across multiple planes of existence feel very low scale, as do the titanic foes the heroes fight, that are less Cthulhu and more Ultraman. Book 9 tries to be about human drama and it follows that these underhanded untrusting bastards wouldn't treat the main character with any respect when all they know about him is he's a greedy little shit who beats up kids just to show off, but it's not a fun read in a series that's all about fun reads.

>> No.19251716 [DELETED]

>>19251689
You really should. The story is a inspired take on the xianxia genre. It reinterprets the setting through a Greco-Mediterranean lens instead of the typical Chinese setting, and I honestly find it quite refreshing. The author has clearly put in a lot of time and thought into merging the traditional xianxia system into the above aesthetic.

The style is evocative in an epic-fantasy feel that a lot of other stories lack. I also like how we're starting from a relatively grounded level instead of having mountains blowing up every other chapter, and it really makes the world feel more real (and only serves to make the epic more epic).

Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are flawless. The prose is smooth and is easy to read, no walls of text involved, and there is very little, if any, bloat. Each sentence is designed to impart something useful to the reader about the world, the plot, or the characters. Nothing here feels like my time is being wasted.

It's still very early on as I write this review, but already we're seeing hints of plot threads here that I'm really excited to see develop. What happened to Solus in the past? I imagine at some point we'll also be exposed to the wider world and that's going to be lit af, seeing how different city-states might have different cults (xianxia sects) forming. It is paced quite nicely, neither being too abrupt, but not meandering endlessly either.

Start with the Darkness that Comes Before. It's an amazing starter for arguably one of the greatest fantasy series of all time.

Bakker's prose seemed noticably worse in the beginning of the novel compared to the second half. A little jarring.
Also I expected a dark novel, and the first one is hardly that dark. Guess some retards on r/fantasy manufactured that reputation, just like they called one of Mark Lawrence's novel "that one with all the rape" even though rape is only mentioned twice in 3 lines total.

At least Bakker respects the reader's intelligence by not having gigantic exposition data dumps.

But my main gripe is that it's an emotionally very flat novel, which makes it very boring to me.
Guess I got filtered.

How so? I found the opposite to be true. Especially the Akka, Esmi, Mimara trio. The Dunyain are a different kind of monster, but other than that, I found Proyas story especially compelling and profound as well.

That's what happens if you read a book from Twitter brainlet who believes in both Socialism and Nihilism.

What did you honestly expect from a bugman who came out as bisexual and wore a rainbow dong in front of everyone to see?

> Especially the Akka, Esmi, Mimara trio.
The Esmenet parts were the ones I enjoyed the most. (And Proyas second)
But the rest is way too flat for me, and I don't feel very compelled to read further.

Maybe if it was condensed to just Akka's and Esmenet's struggles I'd have enjoyed it much more.
I'm not part of the epic-fantasy target audience I've found out.
