>> No.19235792

Jesus Christ the dialogue in The Blacktongue Thief is next-level awful.

>My interviewer hadn't closed the book yet. "It says you favor tall girls. Is that true?" Even as she spoke, her legs lengthened, and she was looking down at me where we had once been level. I felt a pleasant but embarrassing sensation that caused me to cross my legs. "It's a new moon tonight, you know. Most propitious for first couplings. One gold queening and I'm yours 'til midnight."
>"If you knew what I've done to get that money."
>"If you knew what I could do to make you forget."
>"Who's going to watch the shop? While I wreck your womb and enslave your heart, I mean?"
>"I had them both removed. And she will," she said, nodding at an older but still-lovely woman who had appeared behind the bar. A second look confirmed it was the same girl who sat across from me now, only twenty years older. This "girl" was no mere secretary or whore; she was quite probably a Worry (a high enforcer), taking direct orders from the Problem (think mayor). My skin flushed warm with an ugly, seething jealousy. However she had doubled herself, whether grafting, echoing, or somehow bending time, I would never do magic that strong. Never.

What about that time King Bakker dabbed on christcucks?
>“Listen!” Sancla had cried from his pallet one night. “‘And the Latter Prophet said: Piety is not the province of money-changers. Do not give food for food, shelter for shelter, love for love. Do not throw the Good upon the balance, but give without expectation. Give food for nothing, shelter for nothing, love for nothing. Yield unto him who trespasses against you. For these things alone, the wicked do not do. Expect not, and you shall find glory everlasting.’ ”
>“Can you believe it?”
>“Believe what?” Achamian asked. He already laughed because he knew that whatever Sancla cooked up was certain to be deliriously funny. He was simply one of those people. His death in Aöknyssus three years later - he’d been killed by a drunken caste-noble with a Trinket - would crush Achamian. Sancla tapped the scroll with his forefinger, something that would have earned him a beating in the scriptorium. “Essentially Sejenus is saying, ‘Give without expectation of reward, and you can expect a huge reward!’”
>“Don’t you see?” Sancla continued. “He’s saying that piety consists of good acts in the absence of selfish expectation. He’s saying you give nothing nothing! - when you expect something in exchange … You simply don’t give.”
>Achamian caught his breath. “So the Inrithi who expect to be exalted in the Outside …”
>“Give nothing,” Sancla had said, laughing in disbelief. “Nothing! But we, on the other hand, dedicate our lives to continuing Seswatha’s battle … We give everything, and we can expect only damnation as a result. We’re the only ones, Akka!”
>We’re the only ones.
>As tempting as those words were, as moving and as important as they’d been, Achamian had become too much a sceptic to trust them. They were too flattering, too self-aggrandizing, to be true. So instead, he’d thought it simply had to be enough to be a good man. And if it wasn’t enough, then there was nothing good about those who measured good and evil. Which was likely the case.
>Before, the question of his damnation had merely seemed an excuse for self-torment. The Tusk and The Tractate couldn’t be more clear, though Achamian had read many heretical works suggesting that the Scriptures’ manifold and manifest contradictions proved that the prophets, olden day and latter, were simply men - which they were. “All Heaven,” Protathis had once written, “cannot shine through a single crack.”
>So there was room to doubt his damnation. Perhaps, as Sancla had suggested, the damned were in fact the elect. Or perhaps, as Achamian was more inclined to believe, the uncertain were the Chosen Ones. He’d often thought the temptation to assume, to sham certainty, was the most narcotic and destructive of all temptations. To do good without certainty was to do good without expectation … Perhaps doubt itself was the key.

The first three books are the only ones that are good, the latter two (really it's one book split into two volumes) balloon the plot out to the point that it can't be brought back together, which is why the series will never be finished. Even if he releases the next book, there's no possible way it will finish the series. So read them if you want an improved version of the first few seasons followed by a long slog full of crap that ends on a bunch of cliffhangers that will never have any conclusion.

The bigger problem is that, for example, I, and I'd assume anyone who wasn't an autistic fanboy, has pretty much forgotten most of the series anyway. You don't get to put your gigaepic series on a hiatus for a decade and expect people who aren't obsessed to still care. At this point, even if the Fatman does manage to shit his next creative turd out, I'll be faces with several choices:
a) re-read the series from scratch which sounds like cock n balls torture, I still remember the pure dread of turning the page and seeing "Daenerys" in big bold letters
b) browse wikipedia like a piece of shit and feel stupid
c) say fuck it and go into the next book, missing half the subtleties along the way.

I'm currently reading the fourth book of the Wheel of Time, and while I was looking up something earlier I ran across some spoilers, and it turns out that not only the Seanchan aren't disposed of by the end of the series, they also manage to conquer part of Rand's continent AND according to prophecy, at some point in the future they will also end up conquering all of it eventually, while still retaining their sadistic customs. Got memed into reading them. First book is arguably the best in the series, second and third book are decent but way too much cuckolding, kind of a slog but an important set-up.

Four, five, six and seven are absolutely fantastic. The revelations about the setting and the laws of this world, the tiny tweaks to the world of our own and how the changes have descended down through the ages are just fascinating. I think Book of the New Sun did it slightly better, but it's not really fair to compare the two anyways.

I read the British Library horror anthologies Killer Roots and Into The London Fog. Killer Roots was pretty average, and although London Fog featured E. F. Benson and Arthur Machen it was full of shit that was politics. Sure, it was horror, but it wasn't the horror I wanted.
I'm going to track down entries in this series that weren't edited by women. There's plenty of good vintage horror stories, the problem is the people put in charge of finding them.

For all the billions of people he keeps mentioning, the character gallery is rather small. Not to mention that he seems to over simplify society to a point where all his what ifs are kinda moot since his views are so basic.

I mean the books are decent enough but I was hoping for more when it's regarded so highly.

Desu the man is mildly autistic and an insufferable prick. A genius fantasist, but he has the personality of a cornered wombat. Not really. If you like the current political climate you might like her for crossing those boundaries first. If you're exhausted by it and you can't stand any more then stay away. No, the book was always shit, the kind of dross that especially penis-envying teen girls would read to feel better about themselves (but in a seething way, in their bedrooms).

If the fact that she was a pedophile with a pedophile husband whom she encouraged and defended in his serial molestation of young boys has any relevance to the book, it must be that the perverse cretinism of the book in some sense presaged or revealed the corruption of her own mind, and should have led sensible people to ask themselves some serious questions about what kind of person would write something so hateful and bereft of value.

(For those who don't know, the whole point of the novel is to distort and invert the Matter of Britain so that the men are retards who suck and are merely manipulated by much smarter women who trick them into doing evil, which however the book portrays as good. It's the principle of the Black Mass as applied to Arthurian literature.)

Can you give some example themes?
I don't like modern woke culture, however I don't dislike themes of racism/sexism/prejudice when handled by someone who isn't stupid. I'm left wing broadly speaking, but I hate a lot of modern leftists in their approach to the topic.
In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if the classic works deal with these topics much better than any acclaimed modern work can, as they are likely to come from a genuine place of personal belief, where going against the mold actually represented a risk, as opposed to today where virtue signalling is the easiest and safest thing a person can do, and often exists only to score easy points.

Eh, it's not a great climate. Russian shitrpg has the little guy taking on the world vibe of old anglo adventure stories so I take those warts and all. Western self-published stuff can work when the author's self-published neediness aligns with (or doesn't conflict with) your own. But self-published where the author is begging for regime approval, or published works that have been ground through the mill are all but unreadable.

I do. Wokism has cancelled these themes for me. It has burned off all of my excess empathy. Stories about them look like an ugly passive-aggressive power grab, just like in real life.

It's about a different species without genders, not humans being a different biological sex because they imagined it or taking hormones and cutting their generative organs off.
