19224598 No.19224598 [Reply] [Original]

I don't want to read Nietzsche and then be told "I didn't understand him" as happens here 100 times a day. Where does one start with Niet? What translation? I hear the Kauffman is either completely endorsed or scorned, how can that be?

Nietzsche general bread I guess

You probably will understand him just by reading a few good summaries and the forwards to whichever books you choose. He's not too difficult, and that's why these psueds get so angry. They want to think they're in a secret club.

To which we can both say the maker of that picture is dumb as a fucking rock.
But no. You had to be a dumb piece of shit. You probably think Nietzsche aligns with nazis

When people don't understand Nietzsche, it tends to be because they think Nietzsche prefers master morality to slave morality. He doesn't. They also tend to think he thinks compassion is a bad thing but he doesn't. If you read with this in mind you should be okay.

The most optimal way to start with Neetzsche is by not starting with Neetzsche. In other words, start with the Greeks first.

Thats your problem. That IS the problem. you think in terms of Nietzsche being the endgame as an a priori matter of fact. thats what makes so many Nietzsche retards, retards. They dont have the dynamic appreciation of other systems, nor the broader perspective to interact with his project cohesively. It makes many people myopic and oddly enough, dogmatic.

The problem isnt Nietzche, its that people are obsessed with the idea of Nietzsche to the point of being miopic. Start with the greeks. I would recommend you at least read plato and Aristotle. Maybe confessions to.

In order to thoroughly understand Nietzsche, you must thoroughly understand Socrates. To that end, there is probably no better place to start than Leo Strauss' work on Aristophanes, Xenophon, and Plato

Kaufmann is the best you'll get for an english translation, he has a deep appreciation for the material.
Reactionaries get kind of assblasted about him, since he pretty openly scorns their interpretation. FWIW Nietzsche scorned them pretty openly during his life too, though he is a famously prickly character

You don't read Kaufman for the rendering, you read Kaufman for the notes. Hollingdale nails the idiomatic style; contemporary translations by mainline academic publishers are usually more than adequate all around.

GOM
Birth of Tragedy, Pre-Platonics Lectures, Aphoristic works through Daybreak
Antichrist & Gay Science
TSZ, Twilight of the Idols
BGE, Ecce Homo
Correspondence & Notes

TSZ is the cipher for the late works, and the late works will fill the unstated gaps in TSZ. Secondary literature on Nietzsche is hit & miss, all over the place. Just read the source material.

>they think Nietzsche prefers master morality to slave morality. He doesn't.
Quote from The Anti-Christ:
>What is good? - All that heightens the feeling of power, the will to power, power itself in man.
>What is bad? - All that proceeds from weakness.
Nietzsche obviously prefers master morality to slave morality. I agree that he doesn't explicitly scorn compassion as he does pity because compassion can be life-affirming.

to understand nIetzche is to understand THAT he knew the 'john galt's of tomorrow would enslave everyone with technique and technology. he tried to encourage them to read books and be worthy of their status. naturally, this will not happen and it drove him insane once he realized it. Nietzsche is only addressed and relevant in modern discussion through a historicity process in a Foucault sense where they look to past philosophers who justify their bullshit because they're retards. Nevertheless his critique of hegel is trash and he has no considerable response to it.

read the phenomenology of spirit instead
