Lately I've been very interested in Saint Anthony and in how solitude can purify one and make one grow closer to God. Please recommend me some Christian books in this vein. Preferably books written by Christians who underwent great solitude themselves.

I'm very interested in this too.
Also interested in anything that deals with life in monasteries.

St. John of the Cross spent some time in prison, so I think he wrote something about solitude.

I was just researching on hermetism about a month ago, the practice of self-imposed isolation for spiritual purposes is strongly associated with Christianity actually.
Read the writings of the Desert Fathers.

nowadays you can be completely isolated yet experience no solitude. in fact, it may actually be harder to experience solitude in isolation than it would be if you e.g. lived in a busy city. the most isolated people are likely most connected via the internet. important to consider when reading about the value of solitude from pre- mass media writers. anyways, hermitary.com is by far the best collection of resources on the topic

Try the Rule of St. Benedict and In Praise of the New Knighthood. Gives some practical insight into Christian monastic life.

Pic related definitely touches on a lot of these themes throughout. It has a whole section on Anthony beyond what Athanasius wrote about him too.

I wish I could do something like this. Just go off into the wilderness and live simply and just pray and meditate and stuff in solitude. I’d probably die but whatever

would it be fair to say that this is the biggest fantasy amongst males nowadays? almost every single guy i've known has had this wish, and extremely few of them manage to fulfill it.

>almost every single guy i've known has had this wish
how have you not started a commune yet? literally nobody I have ever met advocated for anything like this, they were all 100% inserted into normie society and although they were critical of this lifestyle their conclusion was always "eh but what you gotta do! thanks to facebook I can exist!"

I've thought about. Ultimately though I find it escapist. We're charged to spread the Gospels after all.

I'd do this in a heartbeat. You can buy some run down old rustic house with a bit of land, get a few people who are convinced about it, everyone chips in some savings and helps restore it. It's probably easily covered with negligible money. The finding people part is the absolute hardest but if you have actually met people who mentioned a desire to do this you already have a good start. It's hard to do alone but with some companionship it can definitely be done.

At first it might appear as escapism, but humanity is a community after all. For every blasphemy you have uttered, the monk stays silent. For every lustful look you gave, the monk abstains from looking. For every evil deed you have done, the monk remains restrained. The monk does in excess the very opposite of the excesses we have done as sinners and offers this excess of restraint and humility to God. The entire monastic experience is for the salvation of the world. So it is very appropriate to refer to monks as spiritual warriors.
