Slow Learner is probably his most successful from the standpoint of it achieving it's goals, you can learn a great deal about writing from it. Admittedly it is greatly helped in that it is the one work where he explicitly states his goals in publishing it. It is also the work which you can learn the most about Pynchon from. Deserves better.

this is pretty accurate. i'd switch m+d and lot49, and put V. in the bottom 3

>GR
>Vineland
>Bleeding Edge
>M&D
>CoL49
>V.
>Against the Day (by far his worst)

Haven’t read inherent vice or slow learner. I hate short stories but have IV on my list. Seethe at my picks

Only read Inherent Vice & Gravity's Rainbow.
I actually prefer the first, which is probably in my top 2-3 books all time.
The 2nd was still really good of course, but is maybe a little too long. It wasn't arresting 100% of the way through in the way that the former is, even if it's because IV is more brief.

What should I read of his next?

CoL49 is very good and short as well.

I read V and hated it. I’ve been thinking about reading Gravity’s Rainbow, though. Is it that much better than V?

Yeah. GR is much funnier.

>> No.19218711

Best to worst

Against the day
Mason and dixon
Gravity's rainbow
V
The crying of lot 49
Bleeding edge
Inherent vice
Vineland

Reading him in order, have only gotten through V and Lot 49. They were both pretty good I guess. You can't help but lose the plot reading Lot 49 but its extremely entertaining and funny. V is something im going to have to read again. Very Spenglerian and anti-tech.

I loved the western anarchist storyline in ATD. That novel seems like 4 or 5 thrown together. I found it very uneven personally

For what? Some high IQ non-linear auto-mastubatory linguage games? GR is a big book with a ton of big words without a single thought abput the soul of humanity. Pynchon is for people that haven't understood that intelligence is not value.
