Left and right are relative positions, they accept almost all the same premises (both exist within a "window") and diverge mostly as a way of telling one another apart. All the bravado, extreme passion, and marketing is simulacra. We share one mysterious destiny that neither side can predict consistently.

Modern leftism is informed and jaded by this very principle. Its two pillars are acceptance and empowerment, acceptance of anyone from anywhere, and empowerment of all people's idiot whims. If every human has roughly the same capacity to function, there's no harm in combining human material, and if all popular ideas are filtered through stupefying public discourse, the most logical goal is simply to provide every possible liberty and luxury. This was the reality that confronted leftists when the USSR collapsed: ideology had availed the communists nothing. People preferred the liberty of their own idiotic choices, and the financial freedom to make those choices.

A tankie will tell you the game was rigged, and it was. Rigged in favor of the bigger, stronger bloc. Subconsciously, modern leftists know this, that's why the "window" has shifted to them working within capitalism to entitle lesser classes, rather than propose an alternative to capitalism itself. You're a fool if you think there's anything deeper than power and disillusionment at play here. Most people don't even take their own lives seriously, attaching real virtues and serious thought to politics is almost unheard of, and for good reason. If you think I'm crazy, remember that all the pageantry crap is not political thought.

That is an outright rejection of materialism. The right wing rejects materialism usually for religious reasons. The left rejects materialism because they don't like the idea that human beings are controlled by genes, and as a consequence of that we can control humans by controlling their genes.
