I think about this too. 99% of the books I'm reading come from the 1980s or earlier. How does one even learn about what contemporary books are book.

need some more input with regard to this myself, but you could always start at the pultizer. Didn't love everything I read but at least the prose is guaranteed to be at a certain level

that's how I became familiar w proulx and mccarthy as a degen troglodyte with no lit background

Cesar Aira is the only living author of any value I've found. Literally every other book published after ~2012 is fucking trash and useless to read. This is truly the age of trash literature, mostly due to the rising illiteracy of Western nations and the Reverse Flynn Effect.

Conversations by Cesar Aira is great stuff though.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell and Perdido Street Station. They came out 15 and 20 years ago though.

You could also just read old "classics" that you've arbitrarily ignored. Titus Groan is great and never mentioned here. Old scifi like Rendevous with Rama is quick and easy to to see if you like it.

You need to start thinking for yourself. You are crying about people shoving classics in your face while looking for people to shove modern books in your face. Why? Are you incapable of independent research? Have you read all the classics? You don't have to try hard but could you could at least try.

I tend to look at year end lists from "literary" publications and ignore the ones that seem to LGBT/feminism friendly.

That's not even that bad, I'm barely touching the XX century and going further and further backwards in time. In a few years I'll only read early medieval shit.
