Since this is October, I kinda want to read modern folklore of cryptids and other modern state folklore like the Michigan Dogman, the Illinois Enfield Monster, etc.

Been trying out various fantasy titles from the library... I just blunder from book to book, and it all just doesn't grab me at all, just feels so flat and/or derivative... and so much of the new stuff is so poorly written it's hard to believe the writers are grown adults.
Maybe it's time to move on from fantasy for a decade or so, the pool is stagnant and full of vermin.

It is just as low. You don't notice it because there was less of a distance to fall from the greats of SF compare to fantasy. The greats of SF were great because they came up with cool ideas first, not because they were good at telling stories.

Tolkien/Howard compared to what is produced today; now that is a fucking collapse. Foundation might be grander and better assembled than modern SF, but the writing drop between then and now is less than with fantasy.

An idea doesn't carry a book though. Most of the old Sci-Fi I read would be better off as a short story or a wiki. What carries books are characters, and to a degree prose. I can't enjoy classical Sci-Fi because the writing in most of the books is serviceable at best, more commonly dry and awkward.
Once the core idea of the book is no longer novel to you, the books become incredibly tedious to slog through. Compare that to Lord of the Rings: Everything in those books has been done many times since then, but they still hold up well, because they have style and you can sense the craftsmanship that went into them.

In Sci-Fi characters are usually cardboard thin too. Stephen Baxter is a good example for this. He has many interesting ideas, but his books are horrid to read because he can't write a story or a character to save his life.

For whatever reason there are far, far more fantasy authors who are actually good at being authors.

Yes it absolutely did. Every single male character he writes is an absolute asshole, even the ones that aren't rapists. To Bakker, all masculinity is inherently toxic masculinity, the simple fact that all his male characters use the term "womanish" as an insult makes that blatantly obvious. In addition, he falls into the same trap that all leftists do and makes EVERYTHING about sex, about who is fucking who, who wants to fuck who, and all the bad guys just want to fuck everyone, because Americanized leftoids are obsessed with sex before everything else.

>fell into the same hole that warhammer did

One of my favorite things about Cradle is it doesn't even try to be grounded. Other western xianxia/progression fantasy series like A Thousand Li have mortal humans going around stupid mortal lives in a fantasy setting with the disclaimer that powerful people exist somewhere out there. Cradle has people with 6 arms coming out of their backs and glowing green acid scorpions crawling over them as the norm, not to mention people riding around in castles in the sky if they aren't an intergalactic space invader.

It is incredibly bleak and downright unfun in certain parts, similar to GRRM, but has about 1000% more useful philosophical insight in a single book than Martin's entire bibliography.

It wasn't a hard read, I enjoyed it and am excited to continue the series despite the one-dimensional characters and long passages of le fantasy politics.

It's more like the last straw. If it is an openly high fantasy setting I can let many things pass, but shoehorning some bullshito (and no, the way they are presented they seem rather mundane fighters, and not asians either), then giving gurlz some superior competence at it (none of this was mentioned up til this point, and the reasoning is some bs like, "they are more calm"). It just feel like it was inserted in the last minute for some werid reason.

If you haven't read BotNS yet then read that, it's far better than Prince of Nothing. Dying Urth also far better. Prince of Nothing is high tier nu-fantasy, running in the same race as Malazan, Wheel of Time, Stormlight Archives etc. It is the best of those (maybe Chain of Dogs in Malazan is a bit better but series v series Bakker is better) but the genre is pretty bad. If you liked grrm you'll probably like Bakker.

He really made Yuru and Bayaz just conviniently do nothing for the whole trilogy but pop up at random times and give empty threats.

Gunnar chapters were literally copy pastes of nothing and made no progression which yea is serves to show that some people never change but holy shit the same message would get across without this shit. The great change became absolutely tedious to read through as did Savine povs.

Leo going from literal retard to a "politician" in a span of weeks was retarded.

Rikke's "plot" was really obvious but kind of satisfying. The Weaver also became apparent quickly, but I didn't mind it.

Orso and Vick had satisfying chapters.

Cnaiur uses Serwe as his proof of heterosexuality. He only fucks her to delude himself into thinking he’s not actually gay. He realizes that towards the end of book 2, renounces his people and becomes free of worldly connections, kinda similar to kellhus, completing his arc. He states that he will literally shower in hot Semen to kill Moe.

Yeah not compassion, that was poor wording, but instead the toxicity of conviction in your own beliefs and lack of desire to negotiate. The great lesson akka left to proyas is doubt. The toxicity of religion in bakkers books is in the conviction it gives people to commit atrocities.

As for woman part, “Not everything I say is a lie, Scylvendi”. Kellhus says innate truths that people to achieve his goals and only uses broad lies like “prince of atrithau”. His whole philosophy is abandoning the nations and their identity and he preaches it to his followers religiously (though I admit, it is in part due to how nationalistic tendencies will hinder the needed unity for the great ordeal).

It’s not that she’s just the female god, she’s basically a “yas queen god” who fights for the oppressed and even the god of war can’t meet her gaze.

Bakker isn’t right wing at all. He created a right wing world to show how bad if is. The message in his books is inherently left wing. He doesn’t give women agency not because he’s based but because he showcases how they would actually be treated in a man’s world (no chance at self-realization)
