Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn books are boring.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was alright.

I like the faerie queene better than anything shakespeare wrote.
If you need a "translation" to read london dialect middle english you can't read english in the first place.
"Literary fiction" is just gothic fiction without the trappings and we should all stop pretending its of greater literary worth by default.
Zizek is funny and I won't apologise for admitting it.
Southern Gothic is the most distinctly American genre and if they weren't so determined to paint the south as devoid of intellect they might be able to accept that its also their best.
If you arent familiar with the bible in some literary capacity I just don't care for your opinion on anything written in Europe since 400 AD or so.

I read philosophy the same way I read poetry, novels, and essays-- with an eye for literary merit. The best English language philosophers are George Santayana and David Hume.
Émile Durkheim single handedly destroyed the West
I like Karl Marx's weird sense of humor, Sigmund Freud's almost innocent naivete, Kant's generosity, Hegel's brilliant insightfulness when he's not (strictly speaking) 'philosophizing,' and meditating about the dreariness of Nietzsche's life: what's most important to me about each of these writers.
Shakespeare's brilliance really is unfathomable: anyone whose mind isn't completely dominated by at least one of the characters for a day or two after going through any one of his plays simply can't read
I actually love Homer, the Bible, Montaigne, and Cervantes

— Plot matters. Without a good plot you can't have a good ending.

— Any intelligent writer, in his moments of honesty, ought to be at least a little bit ashamed he is not a musician.

— No video game has yet come close to realizing the artistic potential of the medium. If and when one does, it will be a better film than any yet made, and a better novel than any yet written.

— Cormac is right: the achievements in STEM over the last hundred years make everything 'achieved' in the arts look like the pictures drawn by five-year-olds for their parents to stick on the fridge.

— We could and should invent new words and grammatical structures to extend the language. 'Gay' shows how easy it is for a committed minority to achieve this.

— Corollary to the previous point: the English language would benefit from a natural-sounding, monosyllabic word to mean "he or she".

— Sherlock Holmes is a greater artistic achievement than the entire output of almost every 'serious' writer you care to mention.

— Art should be censored. The world would be a better place if Lady Chatterley's Lover had never been published.

— Pynchon is not worth reading.

While not ideal, reading translations is not bad. Many authors did it too and it didn't have a crippling effect for their appreciation and learning of that literature.

>Plot matters.
Dubliners, Flannery O'Connor, House of the Dead, etc. all refute this.

>ashamed he is not a musician
Read literature out loud. Writers are musicians.

>no video game has realized full potential of the medium
This will never happen. The second a talented person with a great artistic vision achieves any kind of real life experience in the gaming industry, they give up. This isn't because of money, time, the horrible debugging phase -- this is because of the audience of video games. A bunch of whiny, entitled man children who could care less about decent writing and art.

>invent new words and grammatical structures to extend the language
This happens naturally. No need to force it.

>Sherlock Holmes good
I agree. Most of modern literature isn't about art, it's about the artist. A bunch of insecure self-proclaimed geniuses struggling with an inferiority complex. Thank God for capitalism. If people weren't trying to make money off of novels, everything written would probably read like Infinite Jest or Naked Lunch. Ew.

>Art should be censored.
You can't truly appreciate the good without exposing yourself to the bad.

>Pynchon is not worth reading.
Pynchon is absolutely worth reading if you have an intellectual inferiority complex that has reduced you to a depressive state in which you are only happy when you're reading book that you think make you smarter.

Pepper Jack

What’s wrong with pepper jack cheese? Is it gay? I’m tired of everything being gay. Gay this faggot that - let’s find something less trite. Are you gonna call me gay? If you do its because I think 5 inches is perfect. There that’s unpopular for you! And frankly I like fascists better than communists. Communists don’t even trim down there…ewwww! How ‘bout exclamation marks and dashes - I love them…..and the dot dot dot. Be a libertine with your style :). Y’all like y’all too I hope.

Y’all still with me - I like it when authors address their readers. It adds a personal touch. I don’t like Jewish authors. Oh wait that’s popular. Ok fine - I don’t like any Russian authors. I mean c’mon they’re are just pushed by the glowies. And pre Cold War ones are just so dammed depressing. If only General Paulus…..

The best genre is historical fiction. MCCarthy, Vidal, Eckert these are the truth tellers. The Bible is the greatest work of historical fiction with an emphasis on fiction. But you if don’t read it you’re uneducated. You can skip the Jewish Bible though - start with Mark before proceeding to the other Gospels and moving on to Pauls BULLSHIT and then Paul’s disciples BULLSHIT like Timmmyyyyy.

Ok y’all still here. The best of all modern literature is American Transcendentalism and the corresponding American anti transcendentalism. The most seminal of all of this is Moby Dick. I mean Emerson would have had twitter followers but Melville is where it’s at. I’d write more but I prefer not to. And frankly Europeans have never produced anything of comparable quality with the exception of course of Patrick Modiano or someone like that but my memory is failing me here.

Finally I like the captcha system - I’ve noticed an increase in the quality of posts here. 4pnr0
