So my sister teaches English Literature at a private school and was complaining about the abundance of White Male authors on the curriculum. I told her that's because non-whites haven't contributed anything significant to the field of English and specifically British literature. She called me a racist and left the dinner table. Can anyone here actually name one non-white author who was as significant as someone like Shakespeare?

No but that would be difficult you've chosen one of the greatest writers of all time. I haven't read many black authors myself but I know Chinua Achebe is pretty good and George Schuyler as well. The vast majority of POC literature is from a modern era and it only makes sense to compare them to contemporaries. It's a point in futility to ask "Why were there no Chinese people in Britain making great plays in the 1500s?" when people in China were writing significant novels. For American literature, think of To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby as standard bearers. For British literature think of 1984. You know, high school curriculum core that you turn your nose at anyway.
Also, most POC authors have not been partaking in the "1000 page postmodern meme novel" trend so if that's your standard of quality you will be disappointed.

No. Not in British literature. For great non-white writers before the modern era, you have to go to Japan (e.g. Lady Murasaki), China (e.g. Shi Nai'an, if he wrote Water Margin), India (e.g. whoever compiled the Ramayana), the Middle East (Muhammed, the suspended poems, Gilgamesh).

Of course, there are exceptions. Chinua Achebe comes to mind. As it stands there's almost none comparable to native authors but if English weren't the world's common language it would be even worse. What would these ideologues do then? Recently I've been reading Xiaolu Guo, who is a Chinese woman who writes in English (often slightly broken English to some degree). It's interesting to consider the relationship they have with English as their second language. This is different a non-white native Englishspeaker who merely uses it as marketing and has no unique existence or relationship to the language separate. It's gotten pretty bad, because recognition is based on everything but the writing, you almost have to not even try to read them.
