Do you follow your curiosity? Do you read what you think you ought to read? Do you read whatever /lit/ tells you to? something else?
how do anons choose what to read?

>Do you follow your curiosity?
Basically. I have a wide one
>Do you read what you think you ought to read?
Sometimes
>Do you read whatever /lit/ tells you to?
Nah, but there are interesting suggestions
>how do anons choose what to read?
I only buy used books
I mostly don't read stuff that just came out
Most authors I read are dead and most works I read are at least 30-50-100 years old

i look through all of the books i own, starting with the shortest, and then i stop when something seems to catch my mood with its book cover or title or the author, and then i open it and read, and hopefully it grabs me straight away and never lets go. if it does not, i may continue for a while, but if it remains inhospitable, i drop it and continue the search.

I mostly read goal-oriented self help books like “overcoming gravity”, as well as some books on contemporary and 20th Century Buddhist theory and some philosophy when I feel I need it (for example “the myth of Sisyphus“, when I feel suicidal).

I base what more books I read mostly on recommendations of authors in their books, if the book is good. That’s more than enough books.

I find something that interests me but then I find out that I’m “supposed” to read these other books before I can understand the actual book I want to read. So I just end up not reading anything.
Wat do?

>Do you follow your curiosity?
Of course. In a world with so many things vying for your attention, it's important follow that golden thread
>Do you read what you ought to read?
I'm reading through the Western canon currently. I want to establish a good baseline for literary quality. It's difficult to judge unless you have some reference.
>do you read whatever /lit/ tells you to?
There are a number of chads here but most of these chimpanzees don't even fucking read. If you are newer this is essential to know.

Mostly it's intrest but if you're intrested in anything complicated then comprehending it is going to require you to be familiar with certain other authors. Philosophy is a good example. Anyone who just starts with Nietzsche and goes "yeah, I completely understand" has only been made more stupid.

I create a web of similarly influenced authors. FOr instance, I read Blood Meridian, which lead me to Moby Dick, which lead to Shakespear ect.

Kinda whats available at the bookstores and sales that i go to. Super stoked for the upcoming book sale near me, its the biggest used sale in the state. If there's something suler specific I'll order it, but it's fun to read random things based only off of name or something.

Systematically reading through the literature of the world, starting with the Greeks. I reached the 16th century about a year ago and took a break outside of Europe to go East-West from China around the rest of the world. I am currently on the medieval Muslim world (reading Tales of the Strange and News of the Unexpected). I usually start with what's in Penguin for the time/region and look at anything else that catches my interest.

I pick something I haven't read from my shelf, usually whatever contrasts most which what I just finished, i.e. if I just read a history book I'll read fiction, if I just read a long book I'll pick a short one, if I read something simple I'll pick a complex one.

In terms of what I buy, my philosophy is that "the best plans are the ones you never make", i.e. your favourite book will never be the one you expect it to be. So I just get anything, vaguely following the trends I've enjoyed in the past in terms of genre, author, movement, but also just going with my instinct and not putting a lot of thought into what books I buy. Name reccogintion will also make me pick up a book a lot of the time, but I make a point of also picking books I've never heard anyone discuss before.

plot.

Actually, I have so many books (and libgen), that I've started to pick books by the state of their pages. I only want to read pulpy novels, preferably before 2005. Fuck acid-free paper. I look for age-stained books with dog-eared covers, and then I read the synopsis. Hell, sometimes I don't even read the synopsis. If it looks even vaguely readable, I'll get it. idgaf

I look at all the new releases and pick the ones that look interesting, haven't ever "dropped" a book because I have pretty good taste. When it comes to recommendations, fuck no.
