Mariana Enríquez' short stories are good and very comfy. Her books have some misses, as always happens, but many stories are hits. I don't know if these count but Quiroga's The decapitated chicken and The feather pillow are both very good too. This sounds like Let's Go Play at the Adam's, which is super fucked up and nihilistic.

Also recommending Michael McDowell-The Elementals and Grady Hendrix - My Best Friend's Exorcism

The Halloween Tree by Bradbury is fun because you can read it in an afternoon and it's written like a campfire story. Personally I'd have to recommend The Tell Tale Heart or The Fall of the House Usher. I know Usher is the default Poe story, but it really is his most gothic and most vivid short story.
