19149210 No.19149210 [Reply] [Original]

>History is filled to the brim with pain and suffering
>Violence between states, clans, and people is the norm, rather than the exception
>Even during peace, the vast majority of humanity lives in squalor and brutal poverty
>Even the few "Happy Endings" in history are wiped away in as little as a single generation when the next war or famine or plague hits

History books are only filled with more of what you described, but if you can't seen the progress that was made in the quality of life of the individual you need to pay more attention. Also, classic tip to read the stoics and stop worrying about things you cannot change, is the curse of humanity, we will always fight untill fetus dna change is available.

I think thats simply due to selection bias. We talk about the most influential/impactful things. you talk about when someone dies, not so much the contents of the few years when they were "pretty ok". I think its glass half empyism. a pat of perspective.
Why dont you read someones daily logs instead, you get a greater apreciation for the totality of human experience. As humans we tend to have a negativity bias.

going off this, for example, if you think about the percentage of time spent in war in total, it is pretty miniscule compared to time in other activities like harvesting and eating and everything else. Try to read different parts of history, for example. here is a video about sleeping and beds for example of a massive part of human history thats almost never touched on, even though its about a 1/3 of most of human life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C16L3Z8oI_E

again, try to take things in perspective. if one bad situation happens in a 3 year timeperiod. We will tend to focus on it, even though its an aspect of reality, not its entirely.

Again, I would recommend reading memiors for how a life is encapsulated (even then, The one bad event takes up a big part of our psychological purpose, there is less reason to focus on good times, as they are not a pressing threat psychologically.)

Remind yourself that even someone who was killed in a horrible way lived their entire life leading up to that point normally. The happiest man alive could one day have a stroke and be paralysed and die from drowning in a puddle or some shit, but he would still have been the happiest man alive until then.
Life is great!
