If you want a breakdown of how social relations work I found this book to be surprisingly good. A lot of concrete advice as well as a couple of interesting stories from his times at FBI. The most memorable example from the book IMO was a story of how they built a relationship with this foreign ambassador from zero to the point where he was convinced to disclose state secrets and become a spy for the United States.

Anon, I had this problem years ago. There was a girl who I was absolutely crazy about who was sitting across the room from me. Everyone always sat in the same spot, so it was very difficult to move. But one day I did, and we started talking. We were both very neurotic at the time, and nothing came of it except for friendship. Years later we did end up fucking, but it actually wasn't that great. Anyways, maintain your integrity, don't worry about being inconspicuous and just move across the class and start talking to her. Try not to be neurotic or insecure, this will just set you back.
