Don't worry anon. You have 60 years to explore the world of literature past, present and future. It's a beautiful journey and I am glad you're on it with me.

Why yes, reading YA fiction engendered a love of reading in my youth, giving me the skills to read literary fiction in my adulthood, although I occasionally revisit YA to see what new and upcoming authors are doing in the genre.

Childhood is the perfect time to read yafic.

You spent your childhood fostering a love of reading. You should still do some light reading every so often. It's good for the soul.

I'm a young adult (21) and still reading YA because I'm the target audience and I like it.
>nooo don't read books that you enjoy!!!! you should only read nonfiction and force yourself to read classics!! modern book bad!! no a demographic's taste can't change over time you are the problem and a brainlet if you don't like it!!

Doesn't matter, you can read "highbrow" books easily. As long as you're not a fucking retard, you will be able to comprehend books at a higher level. /lit/ loves to dress their reading habits in a mystique but the truth is reading is absolutely not difficult, just get into a routine, and before you know it you'll be through a quarter of the Western Canon.

At least you have an internalized feeling of inadequacy that prompts you to be preemptively defensive about your shitty juvenile predilections. Make sure to sublimate them into personal growth.

dude... young adult lit means 12-18 and it is very clearly written for that demographic. nothing wrong with enjoying it but if you read it when you were that age and have yet to outgrow it, then you must not enjoy literature very much or you're too retarded to demand more. i tried reading fantasy that isn't even YA that i read at that age and i couldn't really enjoy it because i've matured beyond it. only nostalgia allowed me to read it. YA proper is unreadable unless it's more like a children's book, which can be appreciated for it is without getting annoyed or bored.

It's always the same shit on /lit/. There are great people who actually read and somewhat understand the appeal of YA even though they prefer to read heavy books on a daily basis and then there are plonkers like you, picking on people for reading a fucking genre. You are unable to understand you are the very reason they get defensive when such a subject is addressed even though they read more and have unironically more legitimacy to discuss books on a literature board than you do.

I'm the poster. I also read non-fiction and classics, and not all of them are equal just like not every YA book is equal out there--- for example, online books such as Beware of Chicken and Delve are found to be excellent by every demographic even though they're primarily targeting younglings, but I understand your point and your dislike for the setting. It's just retarded to limit yourself to a single genre when there are so many more good stories to read about.

I don't understand why people are treating you with scorn. You're just reading what you want to read. It's better than reading books you have no interest in to boast about them on an imageboard.

Reading YA fiction trained you for this moment where you feel ready to embrace new fields. It's not time wasted!

Your increasingly histrionic demeanor coupled with a bizarre notion that wasting a good chunk of your time on childish pap somehow also allows one to read more "heavy" books leads me to believe this anxiety of yours has long since transformed into a full blown complex. Again, this is good and can be a great source of personal development, provided you don't let it go to waste and steer these feelings into right direction.

YA is not literature just like the McChicken from the dollar menu is not haute cuisine.

I exclusively read scifi/fantasy/romance and generally light hearted, digestible stuff. I mostly do it on my phone/reader so people can't give me shit about it. My life is terrible and reading helps me deal with the endless stress.

>It's okay anon, I can teach you about yourself. I have read the Greeks. Have you read the Greeks? Didn't think so. Why, just last week I was telling dad about reading the Greeks. He hasn't read them either. He only reads the newspaper. SUCH a plebian. Anyway anon, having analyzed your mental state, which I am qualified to do having read Freud in a month. I found him...Elementary, if we are being Candide...Oh did I say Candide? I meant to say Candid! Well I suppose it can't be helped; I have read Voltaire too!

Even though your continued passive-aggressive defensiveness is starting to look quite unhealthy, those greentexts are pretty damn funny. Consider trying your hand at writing instead of consuming puerile verbal mush too.
