i don't remember the title or author
but it was a book about a black cat named Shadow whose owner adopts a little calico kitten.
at first Shadow resents the kitten and avoids her, but they slowly bond and eventually end up frolicking and playing together all day
i remember one line in particular
>"it was a gay old time"
(this was the early 90s, and i was like 5-6 so i had no idea what the taboo meaning of 'gay' was, only that there was an alternate definition besides 'happy')
that books pictures and the story have stuck with me for over 3 decades.

I grew up poor, so the books I got were largely the ones that sat on the library shelves for 40+ years - the Henry Reed series, everything by Beverly Cleary, the Mad Scientists' Club, Encyclopedia Brown etc. In retrospect I got lucky, children's books have really dumbed down recently.

My girlfriend's favourite book is The Little Prince. She loves it.
Her favourite quote is
>It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
She doesn't read much (her main hobbies are composing and piano, while mine is literature) but she can go back to that book all the time.
Personally as a child I loved the Odyssey and Robinson Crusoe.
