Are you joking?
He wrote some good poems, but he's not even in the top 20 of his own language in his own country.
If you want to shill some black poet, Walcott and Guillén would have been better choices.

Phenomenal poet and writer, and overall a great man.

The quality of poem can be accurately measured by if its chosen as lyrics to a song by a talented artist. Hughes' poems have been, more than anyone else's, turned to songs by many very talented artists, nobody else's poems have been covered by so many different musicians, that's fact. Therfore, he is the best poet to have ever been.

>Greatest poet ever?

No, but he is indeed an excellent poet. I think he's great (just not the greatest).

Btw, we're talking about Langston Hughes in this thread. This is his first published poem, written when he was 17:

The Negro Speaks of Rivers

I’ve known rivers:
I’ve known rivers ancient as the world and older than the flow of human blood in human veins.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

I bathed in the Euphrates when dawns were young.
I built my hut near the Congo and it lulled me to sleep.
I looked upon the Nile and raised the pyramids above it.
I heard the singing of the Mississippi when Abe Lincoln went down to New Orleans, and I’ve seen its muddy bosom turn all golden in the sunset.

I’ve known rivers:
Ancient, dusky rivers.

My soul has grown deep like the rivers.

The best black poets aren’t even angl*ids. No offense to Walcott. Hughes is obviously minor (not even rated outside yankeeland really).
