So what does /lit/ think of lyrical rappers and hip hop artists. Eyedea and Atmosphere. Rap with well written and clever lyrics?

>> No.1913500

the only rap i ever hear is biggy and necro and their respective remixes from my more shit-minded friends, and i fucking hate all of it. absolute drivel.

Some are pretty cool, the only thing I dislike though, is that lyrics (in any genre) get lumped together with poetry, it is not poetry at all, but it can be pretty good sometimes.

Brownbear got me into Astronautalis.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGOjoeRq9Ik

The only rap I listen to, aside from early Incubus and maybe Scapegoat Wax.

>> No.1913536

lil wayne has some great lyrics

life is the bitch, and death is her sister
sleep is the cousin, what a fuckin’ family picture
you know father time, we all know mother nature
it’s all in the family, but I am of no relation
no matter who’s buying, I’m a celebration
black and white diamonds, fuck segregation

my favorite line of recent months from Wax:
"get a 5 dollar merlot, we call it merlittle"

I'm good on that, no thanks. All the ardent youth are clever. It takes more than a transitory appeal to the lyrical vogue to (I hate so sound like a pretentious prick) stand the test of time. I bet you are one of those GRR reading fucks. I don't have time to waste on clever lyrics. Or Chuck Palahniuk books. Not 17 anymore.

>> No.1913635

Aesop Rock and Eyedea do a good job at actually making sense with what they're talking about, Aesop has better beats and flow but Eyedea focuses a lot more energy into being clever and meaningful. But it sort of sacrifices quality with his music, the middle ground, Aesop, is much better.

It's a discussion on rap that has intellectual value.
Which is sort of an oxymoron, but it makes for good conversation

>> No.1913651

A. You don't know what an oxymoron is
B. Even if it meant what you think it did, that's idiotic
B.i. Rap has plenty of lyrical (and intellectual -- another word you seem to not understand) value
B.i.i. None of the rap in this thread has any

Personally, I think his lyrics are stupidly simple but he talks about things that no other mainstream rapper has the balls to say. And his beats are top of the fucking line.
