Are there any contemporary art movements like the dadaists or beatniks? Were there ever any contemporary art movements or are they all named in hindsight?

I consider Vaporwave to be the best example of a contemporary art movement.

The historical consensus is that art movements basically ended after Duchamp, and certainly after Warhol and the pop artists. The whole point of post-modernism is that there is no such thing as a movement anymore, that there are no principles, there is no categorization, and everything is as meaningful or meaningless as you want it to be.

But that's just the narrative of art history from around 1850-1950. It's only true if we believe it's true.

All things are possible.

Art is whatever you want it to be

The wrong is too deranged to have a straightforward art movement anymore.

There are trends in contemporary literature but for a while the literary landscape seems to be made up more than individuals rather than generations or groups. There's nothing like the surrealists and the like. I guess you're american, the closest you'll get to something like that is probably writers congregating around specific magazines.

Yes, most avant guard movements like the dadaists wrote group manifestos. The beatniks I don't know if they were named like that by themselves but, as with other literary groups, they were known by that by their contemporaries and had a consciousness of being a group.
