Okay, /lit/, what's the consensus on James Joyce?

He’s great, only contrarians or people with a political axe to grind will say otherwise

What political ax is anti-Joyce?

Finnegan's Wake falls below the level of what could be considered human communication. He was good up to that point. Then, he crawled up his own ass and died.

Doesn't matter. If it fails to communicate, it was a waste of the author's time. It's a nice puzzle book, and there are many websites devoted to helping people decipher it. But it isn't art. It isn't even communication.

Just the fact that he’s a white male “genius” and is an avatar of the traditional notion of canonicity. Concepts that are not in fashion these days.
The content of his writing itself is pretty apolitical and rarely upsets people.

Lol how would this be a btfo? Lukács would have been crawling past grand climacteric around when Ulysses was unfolding academically—if you knew the history of it, you'd lol at this marxoid dumbass. Same goes for FW, which is still going through the unravelling process.

Also this moron's take on "realism" fucking KEK I wonder if you take that quotepic seriously wew

I will lay it out for you if you're too stupid to see what's wrong there

The idea that something a "broad mass of people" enjoys is better for that reason, is retarded. Broad masses enjoy soap operas and Marvel movies, end of argument.

You're misreading it, it's not a question of the taste or aesthetic sense of the masses for literature, but of the purpose of literature for individuals and society.

There are people on /lit/ who get very, very offended at the mere mention of him and I don't know why
Like, look at how many people get fucking furious at the IDEA of finnegans wake. It's uncanny

I think these are people who were filtered. And you can be filtered before even reading it. Then you can get filtered during the first read through. I don't think anyone gets filtered when they do the full on what should I be visualizing read through, it's too compelling at that point (and why it's considered a masterpiece). Not many people get to that point, understandably. I think you have to get sucked into it somehow.

What you mean by "the full on what should I be visualizing read through"? Just immersing yourself in it and allowing the words to stimulate images as you read?

I was trying to avoid saying "going through all the references" which includes old photographs of things that are no longer in Dublin.

This turns a lot of people off.

The novel was written in a way that it comes into full force when it's reconstructed. Ulysses builds the mind that creates Ulysses. I imagine it's the same for FW
