Old paintings are more than fine with me even if they’re only tangentially related, as long as its not modern graphic design. I think there’s actually a certain deftness in good pairings of paintings with books. Just look at the one for NYRB’s Stoner for example. That portrait of him is so fitting and iconic even if the original painting was of someone completely different
