[ERROR] No.19096666 [Reply] [Original]

I paid an author friend $900 to edit my novel. It took her 16 hours, her debut novel was met with acclaim last year, and has bylines for some notable online publications. Despite all that, I feel like $900 was a bit much, and that was with the “friend” discount. Thoughts?

well thats $56/hr which is way too much for some random literature thot who you alone hold in high esteem. realistically, you should've just given editing duties to some rando on fiverr for $20/hr but if you really wanted her opinion than $20/hr is still too much. you probably just want to fuck her so your mind got cloudy and you forgot the value of money

Hola.

I say this given the fact of what's being allowed during his "sexenio".

Checked. There are people I would pay $900 for 16 hours' work, certainly, but I doubt this random friend of yours is worth that. Depends what "editing" you got. If she made profound suggestions which will turn it from something that won't get published to something that will, then $900 was money well spent, I guess.

I sometimes see anons asking people to read their work here on /lit/, but they never offer even small payment. Is that against the 4chan rules?

Editing is not an easy job that anyone can do. It takes effort, talent and years of experience to be able to take semoene's shitty text and turn it into something readable. This, of course, assuming that she can actually write.

That's about $56/hour. That's expensive, but not absurdly so. However, I'm curious as to how much actual editing she could do in 16 hours. Did she suggest real revisions, or did she just proofread?

You absolutely do. I've worked at a locksmith company as a dispatcher and they can easily bring in like 300 bucks for less than an hour of work. The standard price is 120-150 for like 10 minutes of unlocking a car. And since I know you are thinking it, you are absolutely right. The industry is dominated by Israeli jews.

No shit. Editing is not a niche service skill. Nor is it nearly as urgent as "I can't get into my house/car/business." It is neither a rare knowledge nor a priority skillset. Comparing it to locksmithing or valve technics or welding is like comparing apples and oranges. But saying its worth upwards of $60/hr is fucking dumb.

LARP. That's more than the average monthly wage here in Hungary and we're less poor than e.g. the Romanians next door. 900$ for 16 hours of work seems too much, 56$ per hour is incredibly high for this work, not unheard of, but I'd only pay a really good professional editor that much. Just 16 hours seems rushed anyway.

Plus, it's a bit weird for a friend to ask for that much. For a close friend I would do it for free in my free time, even if it took a while .

Partially it depends on how connected you are to the literary world. Do you have an in to getting published, or are you a rando with no connections? If the former, then it probably can be written off as a business expense. If the latter, then you have to factor in this employees opportunity cost. Assuming 56.25 is her standard hourly rate, and she works 2000 hours a year, then she is worth about 112,000 a year from writing. If this person does make that amount, then that's a fair cost of doing business, but desu I think you could've talked her down to 600. If you don't know if it's a good deal it's safe to assume you've been screwed

She didn't edit it, she proofread it... maybe--if you can't see your own grammatical and typographic errors you won't see the ones she missed. A real 'editor' shapes the text in a collaborative effort over several drafts. In short, she jacked you up but you deserve it. Learn to write if you want to be a writer. This. Receiving money from a friend in exchange for a service feels too transactional for me to be comfortable with it. If the person were truly my friend I'd be more than happy to simply do them the favor.
