unironically yes. you have no idea how fucking retarded and soulless the people in this country are, it cannot be understated.

also, i've been caught waiting around and used a coffee shop/bar to read in the past a few times. it's insufferable, you absolutely will get people who just walk up to you and start talking about how you're reading a book (WOW!) while you wait for an appointment or something. not to mention everybody in US public is loud/grandiose and try to take up as much space as possible (because everything is a competition, even sitting around). sometimes i want to shake my ancestors for immigrating to this shithole, i'd rather be poor.

Literally every single place in this thread including the hobo nest and the toiled and Jordan Peterson look more comfortable to me than the very best spot in my own home. There's an easy chair in front of a window but there's a refrigerator in the same room that produces a maddeningly loud buzz that drives me insane. Every other room is just terrible, this house is cursed, it's not dirty or run down but profoundly wrong in its layout, like someone took care to anger all the Feng Shui spirits imaginable.

I sleep in a terrible room full of junk that doesn't belong to me. There are multiple closets that don't match and the bed is encased under one of these, so there's this huge overhang 60cm above my head when I sleep. There's a TV in a corner set up in a way that doesn't face me, and even if I never turned it on there's something uncomfortable about a huge catode TV that faces the other wall in the room instead of the most logical position. It rests on top of a closet full of VHS tapes. There are other things too. I hate sleeping in that room.

im a zoomer still in highschool (18), and i can testify that not only does it make you different, but people will regard you as aloof. ive heard countless times, "you're just reading that for pleasure?" or "oh my god the print is so small" from peers and teachers alike. its hard not to give into the edgy "different" teenager archetype when everybody else is shoving you into that corner.

a funny sidenote, because its a bit telling. during study halls and lunch, i often retreat to the library to read. i have been kicked out of the library for "taking up space" countless times. i still go there, but teachers walk around eyeing me. i probably sound like a schizo, but they'll try to pretend like they aren't looking at me and will hover over my shoulder; sometimes random teachers will ask me my name. typically study halls would be in the cafeteria, but people there are so loud and scream like banshees. the library is my only hope bros, but i have a feeling im going to be forced back into the cafeteria sooner or later.

and yes, im american

I'm also 18 and in HS, but from slovenia, and I think it's a more generational thing than it is american (maybe it's a thing for this generation in the west). I go to a school for people who don't want to go to uni, and even here people will definitely think you're different if you read, teachers included (though they wouldn't kick me out of the library). I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in my entire class that ever reads more than one book a year that our profs don't force us to read, even though higher level slovene is mandatory in this school.
In our third year(27/18 year olds), we had psychology, and I was the only one out of the 27 students in my class that knew who freud was. Is this normal for this age group of students that are planning to go to uni or is it just a coincidence?

It is very interesting how many of the replies to this are hostile. There is nothing inherently pretentious about reading in public. Some people find it hard to focus in their own homes due to living with others, unideal environnent, and other things. Some people spend all day in their homes doing WFH or studying, and need a change of environment to enjoy something during leisure time. Some people struggle to focus due to the sound or lack of sound in their homes and get what their ears need in other environments. A little bit of empathy and few moments of thought should lead a typical able-minded human to this conclusion, and in a friendly way I suggest doing some introspection if you didn't land here to see why you're uncomfortable with others knowing you read or find it distasteful yo see others read. I personally am most productive reading on my porch, but who am I to attack someone who reads best in the Walmart parking lot?

Those aside, reading in public is committed by overt pseuds or aggressively autistic idiots who need to be doing something always and can't sit alone or fear even the appearance of it so they read, fool around with phones, or fidget. I like breaking into random people's houses while they're at work and then reading under their bed. I always pick the lock and make sure to lock it back so they don't suspect anything. Its pretty cozy, but it becomes the coziest place to read after they go to bed.
I love the feeling of your cozyness all around you with the light and smell of your coffee and the delicious coffee. (Not much else needs updating at this point. As the sun's setting up in the afternoon, I can't help but smell the fresh coffee and your hot, inviting aromas. I am so so sad to hear that Starbucks has moved in this location and my girlfriend, who also owns a coffee shop here, has to move in with us and she is so happy she can take an active part in the job!)
If you're a local who does, it will be good if the place is at least a half mile from your house. So, go and feel the people in full, and stay for a few days when nothing seems to be happening. When you first move out, you might get a feeling of the place being close to the place, while you live there. Once you've noticed that, it changes your life.

Pretty much no kids read outside of required reading for school, but the few readers generally didn't get any shit from the teachers. I'm curious what part of the country you live in, I went to high school in upstate new york. my university is on long island and it's not uncommon to see people reading books around campus. I can say though that pretty much 8 times out of 10 if someone is reading a book it's a woman. There's too few readers but I wonder what explains the gender gap we see today.

Middle school teacher here. The kids ask me about stuff like my favorite TV shows, manchild movies, and tiktok nonsense and are extremely averse to reading. Getting them to write complete sentences is often a struggle, like pulling teeth. Getting them to write multiple sentences is borderline impossible depending on the class. They ask me what words like "mild" and "shortcoming" mean. Every day I'm reminded of how terrifying the future is. Everyday is a new horror.

kek you're probably a woman. obvioulsy if you tell the boys to read they'll think it's gay because you're a woman and they don't respect you on a biological level. if someone like me were to tell them reading is cool and i showed them stuff like the unabomber manifesto, they would think reading was badass. the problem isn't that young boys don't want to read or be virtuous, it's that they have no positive male role models because the government doesn't allow that to be possible. the government makes sure they're raised by roastie teachers and taught about the holocaust and how evil they are.

yeah you're fucking retarded and still believe all the propaganda you've been fed about how evil men are. you probably think that the type of book middle schoolers think is cool would be like catcher in the rye because le prostitute and le banned by libraries. boys do not think degeneracy is cool, they think honor and virtue is cool, they think fighting for your beliefs or for the weak is cool, not just fighting for no reason.

Like it or not, sociological conditioning has an effect, even if the biological predisposition isn't that strong. And I'm arguing against teaching middle schoolers with materials like Ted Kaczynski - my argument is that if you were to introduce those more mature themes, there's a litany of literature already out there that is much more appropriate.
