Not before, but you should have in hand Beth Lord's commentary as you read along. Very good analysis, and explicates each of Spinoza's line succinctly.

If you understand the definitions sections, you should be able to understand it without any further reading. If you don't, The Republic, Nicomachean Ethics, Anselm's ontological arguement, and Descartes' Meditations should do the trick, maybe with some kind of secondary explanation to make sure you get the concept of "substance," "essence," and "adequate ideas."
