>To me, every book is a bible
The magus of the North is severely underated and said everything Niechzche was going to say but better.
Albeit Hamann had little knowledge of Persia as far as I know.

Quick rundown on his thought?

>> No.19079042

>In Hamann's own terms Kant was a "Platonist" about reason, believing it disembodied, and Hamann an "Aristotelian" who believed it was embodied. Hamann was greatly influenced by Hume. This is most evident in Hamann's conviction that faith and belief, rather than knowledge, determine human actions. Also, Hamann asserted that the efficacy of a concept arises from the habits it reflects rather than any inherent quality it possesses.

Exceptionally based.

Ok, I'm convinced.

>Hamann's writings are all short; he was not given to extensive treatises. They are also usually motivated by something very specific: someone else's publication, or particular circumstances and events. When responding to these, he presupposes considerable knowledge on the part of the reader; typically his responses to the work of others involves adoption of their terminology and style, blending into mimicry and parody as a rhetorical and argumentative device. Moreover, woven into these writings is an extraordinary breadth and quantity of citations and allusions; and by no means are these all clear and obvious. Thus, when he chooses, his essays are a tapestry of multicolored threads of the ideas, language, and imagery of thinkers, be they ancient, biblical, or contemporary.

Yeah, I have the Cambridge "Writings on Philosophy and Language" publication. He's a bit difficult to follow, by way of his gratuitous epigraphing, ironies and allusive style, but still worthwhile

After enlightenment is the essential work to read in English but not having German locks most material away from your reach anyways.

that is why he self-inserted himself right into the Bible: 'After Haman was appointed the principal minister of the king Ahasuerus, all of the king's servants were required to bow down to Haman, but Mordechai refused to.'

No it's simply that everything is intelligable as symbol therefore everything is language and thus the word of God.

Thinking and speaking and witnessing and acting are different octaves of the same grand function of articulating the intelligable symbolism of life, thus poets are the highest manifestation of man.

This based autist literally discovered the mercurial logos process by means of his own autism. Absolutely incredible if you aks me.

Cambridge is reliable, but translation isn't going to truly encapsulate his ironies, sarcasm and overall stylistic prose. Kant, for example, is pretty easy to read in German given you've drilled grammar and at least have a couple thousand words under your belt. I was reading Kant's prolegomena after 5 months of drilling vocab on Anki (this was whilst I read Sandberg's textbook). I implore you to learn German, but if you can't, try and find a pdf of this book. It contains English translations of Socratic Memorabilia, Aesthetica in Nuce, a selection of essays on language, Essay of a Sibyl on Marriage and Metacritique of the Purism of Reason. I've seen isolated English copies of Socratic Memorabilia, but never of the rest (besides the language essays)

You won't be able to purchase an actual copy btw, it's fucking $450.

I intend to read German (I read the first chapters of Sandberg's book a while ago with no pretension at all, without taking notes and forcing to memorize vocabulary and I can see that at least the very basics is still alive whenever I read something in German), but I'm learning Italian and intend to master it in order to read really old shit like Cavalcanti, Guinizelli, da Lentini, so I have a lot of work here. But despite my deep interest in Hamann, I don't plan to read his works for now as well, I think I could set at the right time my studies on German Idealism, Romanticism with him and the German language.
Finally, thanks for the recommendation, this seems really good.
