I never understood this meme about LOTR. Its morality isn't black and white at all. There is plenty of nuance to the motivations and ethics of the characters.

Exactly. You can't even say this a complaint exclusive to moviegoers because the films included plenty of "grey morality" as well. The idea of well-intentioned people doing immoral things for "good" reasons is pretty much a central theme of LotR. It's the entire idea behind how the ring corrupts people. There's certainly plenty of cases of black and white evil and good, but any good work of fiction will employ both.

Because it's a beautiful mythology. It even puts forward a great reasoning for why gods and angels would not intervene in the affairs of men. In the books man suffers his mortality because souls willed themselves to be mortal. This in essence meant that humans were not entirely the creations of divinity, and higher powers have a duty to hold them to their own destiny and struggle with evil.

There are appendices, two other books and 12 volumes on the history of Middle-Earth to tell you who those humans are.
