Does anyone have any experience getting a book off the ground using Kindle Direct Publishing? I wrote a novel a couple of years ago that never got picked up by any agents, though it did get a small bite from one before they ultimately rejected it. It's literary fiction, but I'm packaged it as a "psychological thriller" with "paranormal elements" for marketing purposes. I want to self-publish it under a pseduonym, so at least it's not a total waste. Maybe it'll crack a bestseller list and make me a couple of bucks. I've already bought a good book cover for it. I'm afraid I'll publish it on Kindle, stuff its product description with keywords, through $500 away on pay-per-click ads, and see nothing come of it. If nobody leaves a review on its Amazon page, I don't think it'll gain traction. Any ideas how to prevent this issue from arising? Has anyone had any success promoting genre fiction on Kindle?

There’s this book. The guy who wrote it came from here apparently. It’s the most well known example I can think of. Maybe try buying 4chan ads like him?

Never done it myself but when I picture a self-published author I imagine a slog of social media bullshit that is more work than writing an actual novel; tending to twitter and facebook and instagram and blogs and newsletters and goodreads and god knows what else in a desperate bid to get your face and links to your work on every platform available online.

It's not so bad. A few hours on paid ads and a few shills here and there. Trad publishing entails more hours, I'd say. It's a hassle, too. And you're often expected to do readings, media, podcasts, etc.

Just imagine trying to fulfill your fantasy of becoming a writer during the collapse of Western civilization. It's time to wake up.

why would you want to attract the kind of reader that clicks on amazon ads?

Find people on goodreads that you can give advance review copies to so that there are already reviews when you're ready to start shilling it. People love to feel special by getting to read a book before it comes out - shouldn't be difficult to find people willing

An introvert retard's nightmare. I can imagine myself stuttering and sperging during some live interview and revealing what an unread fraud I am
