For those of you that write your own stuff, how often do you show it to your friends and family?

>> No.19058959

Very often. I dont get why that would be embarrassing

>> No.19058963

Never

I don't really do that, but some of them have bought one, read it, and told me afterwards.

NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*!!!!!
Argh.
PS: They see it the same way (sometimes).

>> No.19058973

I don't. When I release my book I will get 4chan ads like the Call of the Crocodile guy and become loved by all. It's going to be a surprise to everyone who knows me.

You just put your mental illness out there for the world to see, huh?

>> No.19059506

If you are scared of what your family thinks of your writing then you are likely just using writing as an expression of your own vices and petty desires, rather than art.

I think art-creation is one of the most intensely personal things someone can do and it's more than understandable that some people would be hesitant to bare something that intimate to others whose respect they desire.

Or, your family are swine. Scripture tells us not to cast our pearls before swine.

>> No.19059630

Absolutely not. My family doesn't care, they hate that I am dedicated to pointless things.

Why would you think that unless you are writing something that might lower the respect people have for you?

Vice and Desires have no place in Art?

I think it goes without saying that if they lose respect for you then they probably didn't like your work.

>> No.19059671

Does it? I have a very gay uncle (closeted) who secretly loves my work but has no respect for me because he's afraid of me being so out might cause him to be revealed.

>> No.19059677

>>19059652
Not what I am saying. When art becomes a means for indulging a vice it usually suffers as the art exists as a mere vehicle to satisfy some petty want.
Art that takes vice as its subject can be plenty good.

Yes, however:
Luke 12:51-53
Think ye, that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, no; but separation. For there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided: three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against his father, the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother, the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.

Never. Shortly after I started writing I realized most either make it about me or about themselves, they will see it as truth about me or thinly veiled criticism about them, got tiring quickly. I found that it was affecting my writing, I was getting concerned about how the people in my life will take it instead of how my readers will take it, so I removed the issue the only way I could, as far as everyone in my life knows, I no longer write. The downside is that if I ever make it someone will likely put in the time to figure out my identity (publish under a pseudonym) and then everyone in my life (mainly family) will be offended that I kept it from them. The downside is that it removed all care about what the family will think or read into it, all and my stories about familial expectations and keeping up the appearances of the caring family unit in modern society keep getting accepted and printed, it will not turn out well if my family ever finds out and reads them despite the stories not being about them, only informed by them. Still have a long ways to go before I really have to worry about such things, but each story that gets printed makes it all a little more real.

Well, that is somewhat painful to read. It would be nice to be able to edit on a screen, it seems beyond me, have to print it out first. Would think that 30 years of computer use would leave me reasonably adept in such things.

It was a space opera published through Tor Books and they're the only publishing house I've had experienced with, but they were very hands-off. The editing team ask for zero plot-related or pacing changes, they were purely scanning for grammar and word choice. The manuscript I sent them is basically what they printed.
