dont care

Pinker is legit. The only reason /lit/ might hate writer or scientist X is if X is a popular one. The armchair philosophers here never accounted anything in their lives, and seethe how someone is gaining some fame or success somewhere, thinking on some """Ironic""" level they are really that smart but "my life hasn't started yet".

You can't be this retarded can you? Civilization caused illiteracy and poverty I guess right? Retard.

Illiteracy is irrelevant in oral tradition. Poverty is irrelevant when there is a functioning environment that provides everything that is needed. Civilization destroyed both

The biggest issue with the theory that violence has declined is lack of archaeological record. It's not like there were statistics on how many people experienced death by violence deep from the past.

I thought I saw him in San Antonio at an Indian restaurant. I was going to tell him his books are horrendous but I'm pretty sure it was just some old guy; then again there was some 5-year-old wearing a flat cap? with him, in Texas of all places!—it may well have been him.

apologies for borrowing somebody else's rebuke to the book but I remember Academic Agent's being pretty good. doesn't really sink Pinker's points per se but does cast doubt and shows that he was very selective (perhaps rising to the level of deceitfulness, as AA shows at least some of the info pinker must have encountered yet nary a mention of countervailing data) on what data he based his sweeping generalizations he made.

I think Pinker overstates the optimistic view of progress. Thomas Piketty lays out a pretty devastating case that we are exiting the only period in human history where an individual could amass wealth through their own labor and skill and are rapidly returning to a money landscape entirely dominated by inherited wealth and income from already amassed capital.
