Not all israelites were jews but all jews are israelites. What is a jew? You could say that is someone who belongs to the jewish religion BUT only if we understand religion in a total way, like it was in the past, defining the whole of the respective tradition and identity. Why are jews israelites? Because they are from the tribe of Judah, one of the 12 israelite tribes, like Jesus Christ himself:
Revelation 5:5
