Both meters and rhymes are archaic remnants from a time poems were primarily made to be sung and recited.
If the poetry is primarily to be read (as is 99.5% the case since the mid 19th century except for the psalms) they are unnecessary. And indeed since that time they have been less and less observed. If anything plays is where they should be respected.

I think that's part of the thing, Men rise their value though social status while the value of Women past the puberty only decreases with time (and children). Free verse is blows meter out of the water when done correctly. The problem is that poets attempt to use free verse to subvert meter when they have no mastery or understanding of meter. Plath, Pound, and Whitman make it look so easy and people imitated them without ever learning the craft behind it.
