Why is it so taboo? Not sexually attracted to kids myself, but I do find it interesting that pedophiles are utterly reviled for desires outside of their control in the same way that homosexuals were in the last two centuries.

Because the consent based model of acceptable sex becomes obviously ridiculous when applied to children.
