There's a lot of good basic overview in Mieville's "October," and Tariq Ali's "Dilemmas of Lenin." Sadly there still isn't a definitive multi-volume biography, the way there is for Trotsky or Stalin.

In English, not sure about Russian - there have been a lot of biographies written, of course, but most of them carry a heavily anti-Communist slant from the Cold War era, especially Robert Service's. Probably the best single-volume effort was Lars Lih's, but nobody's yet had the obsession to sit down and write multiple thousand pages in the mold of Deutscher's "Prophet" trilogy, or the Kotkin Stalin.
