I was about halfway through the first draft of Oathbriner when a friend brought to my attention the works of Richard Scott Bakker. Being the voracious reader of fanasy literiture that I am I absolutly devoured these tombs in a little over a week. And I kid not when I say that I was thunderstruck by the monsterous, unearthly talent on display. There was the intense battles; so powerfully rendered that the bloody vistas came upon you like a revelation of Biblical magnitude. But it was not merely the masterclass of prose that brought these battles to life, it was the pitch black lore that contextualized these beautiful nightmares with abyssal meaning. This blackness beyond blackness was, of course, achieved only by anchoring this lore-of-lore in themes of a the most highly intellectual nature found in philosophy. Truley the mind of Bakker puts modern "professional" philosophers to shame. Arguably Bakker's greatest achievement is uniting all the above in a poignent study of his characters psychological states as they begin to comprehend both the world Bakker has crafed for them, and the deeper philosophical truths that reach beyond mere fantasy to reveal the real world, almost implications that they hold for us, the readers lucky enough to experience this once in a lifetime tour de force. Implications of an almost Lovecraftian nature.

Oh. Bakker. *nervous laughter*. I was really hoping no one was going to ask me about this. I mean, *coughing* how does one talk about a person who has rendered your life's work obsolete with their first book, never mind the ones that followed. I had put off reading his work for a long time. It wasn't just professional envy from hearing all the praise heaped upon him, but the man himself he uh *inaudible* force of presence that...ah *heavy breath* intimidating. So, anyway, yes I read them. What do you want me to say? That the intense battles burned so bright as to make my own look like matchsticks? Or conversely that his lore is so pitch black that it makes mine burn brighter than the sun, or how about the stratospheric intellect behind the interweaving of real world philosophy with poignant character psychology? Not to mention the unnerving implication of Lovecraftian horror that permeates all quarters of his writings. *Long pause* So yes. There is nothing left for me to do as I have been outdone. I am done. Finished. *stomach gurgle* There will be no Winds of Winter.

There was a smile on his face, but not a human one, as he emerged from the gravewomb of the library's shadowkissed interior. The musculature of his visage slid like moist vaginal folds across the phallus head of his skull, just as it had been conditioned to do. Eyes that saw but did not see. A mind, predatory in its resting malice, that did not think but merely calculated.
"If I just stimulate this part of your brain" he said, a voice both sonorous and ragged, "You would rape your own mother and think it was your own decision to do so".
Slowly he retreated back to the dark, light's caress leaving his face, his body, and finally the hard arch of his cock pressed high against his belly.

Hey, /sffg/.

I'm a guy who's a big fan of old fantasy books like King of Elfland's Daughter, Phantastes, and Andrew Lang’s Violet Fairy Book.

Do you guys know if there's any other books that have a fable-like feel?

I know that feeling has become lost after every author tried to copy Terry Brooks and I'm hoping that there's still some interesting books to check out.

If all else fails, I'll go buy copies of Argosy and dive into the pulp rabbit hole.

Titus Groan is a genuine masterpiece, incredibly intricate. I love how the characters are simultaneously cartoonish and complex, and that there are just characters - no heroes and no villains, except maybe Steerpike. The book seems to start to devolve towards the last quarter, switching to present tense and doing that thing where a characters accent is telegraphed by writing, for example, "yis" instead of "yes." At least once the narration breaks the fourth wall.

How come the Tekne, the science of a highly advanced spacefaring civilization capable of genetically engineering entire new species of complex organisms, wasn't able to create beings with intelligence equal to a group of recluse medieval monks who had to rely on the primitive technique of selective breeding to modify themselves?

The Tekne is more or less bent exclusively to creating engines of genocide. The Inchoroi while having more agency than the other weapon races, are still tools.
It also pays to remember that this is the only planet where they have encountered sorcery, it took them off guard and by the time the wars with the nonmen ended there were only two of them left, the Tekne had been largely forgotten and would only be recovered over the course of hundreds of years through retro-engineering with the help of the humans who reawakened them.

Despite the threat they posses by the time the Dunyain come around the Inchoroi are very much on their last leg.

>Right, but why didn't they make them smarter?
Given we know nothing about their true purpose, nor who made them, we can't really answer that. They (the creators of the Inchoroi) could have had more advanced flesh constructs, with Inchoroi being fairly low down the totem pole. Those could have not been present, or died in the Arkfall. We've no idea.

Furthermore, much of their shit was destroyed during the actual crash:
>According to the Nonman King, not one in a hundred Inchoroi survived the Ark’s fall from the heavens, and yet a thousand thousand of them had warred against the Nonmen over the course of their innumerable wars.

One dunyain was enough to bring a continent of humans to heel. Humans. He co-opted leadership of a bunch of civilisations. And Kellhus is exceptional, even for a dunyain.

Name a SciFi fantasy author to publish in 2020 (or however the timing works for this awards, I don't care)
who is a white man, who's book was good

I can name; Adrian Tchaikovsky, Peter F. Hamilton and Neal Asher

The latter one of those is very niche. And I won't argue Neal Asher is for everyone, even if I think he is criminally underread.
The others didn't "wow" me, even if I still really enjoyed them, they have written very similar books before, that was better received by critics.

Priest of Gallows (War for the Rose Throne #3) - Peter McLean (2021)
After coming off from the personal disappointment that was the ending of the second book, I was concerned that would affect my enjoyment of third book. Thankfully, it didn't. While this book was significantly divergent in many ways, mainly my expectation of where it was going and what characters would be doing, I still derived great pleasure from the many happenings. Perhaps that's the wrong thing to say considering some of the brutal scenes, but it's true. There was one character in particular that I had great hopes for, but it doesn't seem that will be the case.
The greatest addition to my enjoyment from this trilogy has been the narrative voice of the protagonist, mostly literally, though also figuratively. As this is an entirely subjective matter, it may not have any bearing on its worthwhileness for most others, as I haven't the slightest idea how common this sort of reaction would be. It's so integral to my reading of this though that it bears mentioning. One of the reason I don't listen to audiobooks is that it's just odd to me to not to be hearing my own internal narration.
The greatest subtraction from my enjoyment for this book in particular was the decision to include several contemporary events and concerns, by which I mean almost verbatim sayings and occurrences from recent years. Maybe future readers won't connect it to what was happening at the time, but I'm a present day reader. The ending also disappointed again with how overdone it was and what it seems the fourth book will be about. I'll probably still rather enjoy it overall and give it a four star rating as well. If it weren't for the two aforementioned problems I may have rated this 4.5 rounded up. There are a lot of questionable choices and not the slightest hint of subtlety in any way whatsoever, but it's just too much fun for me to really care.
Rating: 4/5

A hobby of mine is thinking up supernatural abilities that people in a story or comic/manga could have. My problem though is that I can't help but examine how someone would take any power to its total logical extreme.
For an example of this, take My Hero Academia and that kid who can control people's minds if they answer a question he asks. That is genuinely an SSS rank power; nearly anything that allows direct control of another person is very powerful, and thus one has such an easy condition for activating that someone could very feasibly trigger it on very influential people (billionaire CEOs, politicians) without anyone even noticing. And instead he broadcasts it in an extra curricular school tournament. It's like if someone obtained the Death Note and used it only to perform more humane executions, or if The Flash only used his speed to deliver pizza.
Anyway, I just wish I didn't get so autistic about this kind of thing. It's clear that many authors and artists put less thought into the powers in their stories and easily get away with it since the target audience of these sorts of works aren't super critical.

Sorry anon. But the problem with boards like 4chan, is that any autist can make the same posts as many times as they like. And because they're autists, they get into these repetitive behaviors. If it's not posting about Bakker, then it's something else. You should realize by now that most of 4chan's threads are made by only the most dedicated autists. They effectively dictate the content of the entire site, since their constant reposts grooms users to act in accordance.

The only winning move is to leave 4chan.

I've come to really favor the 'sorcery' aspect of Sword & Sorcery over the 'sword' side these days. I think 'sorcery' has more fertile ground for storytelling and weirdness in general; whereas 'sword' is pretty limited in its focus on action first and foremost. It doesn't help the majority of 'sword' focused S&S writers just aren't that creative or stylistic when writing action. Hell this isn't even a problem with S&S writers, but most writers in general who write action.

I would heartily recommend the works of Brandon Sanderson who has helped modernize and popularize the concept of "hard magic", which is basically the idea that magic needs rules to make sense just as there are rules for science. Fantasy can largely be divided in to before and after Sanderson, a divide which is synonymous with Unrealistic and Realistic fantasy.
