What are some decent fantasy novels set in a roughly late-19th to early-20th century setting? Basically right around the Boer War to WW1, mass adoption of cartridge fed rifles, armored trains, automobiles starting to rear their heads in large quantities, all that good shit.
Bonus points if magic and the growing technology interact with each other in a significant way (especially if magic and technology actually compliment each other since with most these things they're treated as opposing forces).

What are some interesting pre-2000s fantasy stories/series that have gone below the radar of the mainstream? I legit know like 8-12 stories and thats about it - Black Company, Dragonlance, Dark Tower, Terry Pratchets works etc. As you can see most of them are relatively mainstream.

But surely there were more? Asking this because I stumbled upon a fantasy story written in 92 that had like 2 reviews on goodreads - bought dirt cheap for like 1 dollar. That story ended up blowing me away.

This got me thinking though, how many unnoticed masterpieces are actually out there?

Inhibitor Phase, Revelation Space - Alastair Reynolds (2021)
Although Reynolds states that this can be read as a standalone, I don't think he'd want to want to say otherwise. It's true that it can be, but I think that would be decidedly inadvisable. This books draws upon thirty-one years of Revelation Space stories, though mostly it references from the last-twenty two years. If you're someone who cares about getting all the references, you'll need to have read all his previous RS works before reading this. If that's too much, then having read Great Wall of Mars, the Revelation Space Trilogy, and Chasm City should be sufficient to recognize almost all of them. This takes place between the end of the final chapter of Absolution Gap and its epilogue and at the time of Great Wall of Mars for the flashbacks.
There are noticeable differences in this as compared to the RS trilogy. While I still consider it rather bloated for how much is accomplished in around 500 pages, at least he's improved his pacing and avoided skipping parts of the plot for whatever reason he may have had in previous books. The characters still have some very silly dialogue and questionable characterizations at times, though he's become better at presenting them consistently.
The weakest part to me was the plot. It's odd in that it's more of a fantasy plot than what I'd typically consider science fiction. This isn't necessarily undesirable, but it was strange to have read it in what's often described as a "Hard SF" series, not that I'd agree with that. If this were a fantasy story, it'd be that a wizard comes to find the chosen one who has to acquire the sacred keys to unlock the forbidden temple of the gods to acquire the holy relic of power to defeat the evil overlord. It was similar to that to me, but as science fiction. I don't know how much this would matter to the average reader because the purpose of much of it is to show off tech and do fancy space things.
The best part was that finally the Inhibitors are shown in battle and are given much more detail of how they go about destroying everything than has been shown in all the past books combined probably. I would have preferred much more involvement from them, but it wasn't meant to be. If there's another book, maybe it'll be about fighting them, but I doubt it.
Rating: 3/5

I unironically found Christ at the Jungian fiction crossover junction between Carroll's Wonderland and the Judean Desert after reading Hegel. From my memory I was trying to rape and strangle Alice to brutal death alongside the spirits of Beria and Dirlewanger when Christ wandered across the Jungian portal and to stop me. check it

why can't a company, a ratings agency if you will,
just get ct scans of a bunch of models skulls, like 1000s of the best looking men, 9/10s (maybe they come up with a formal way of rating men using some secret sauce algorithm). then simply average the sample bone structures of those men, and then release result as blueprints for cosmetic surgeons, and it for whatever reason its inevitably leaked on TikTok, so everyone has blueprints for the 'perfect' face, during the consultation stage with a cosmetic surgeon patients supply these ct scans, its become a TikTok trend, they get a comparison between the blueprints and and a CT scan of their skull to inform them on what custom implant dimensions would fill in their flaws their gaps.

Surgeons basically do it because there is so much demand. what are some /lit/ ways to develop this, I want to write covert incel /lit/? would a comic be my best format? You have many guys running around with the same face (although not really you'd be amazed how finely attuned we are to detecting the slightest difference in face)?

I dunno thoughts/insights appreciated

The Father revealed himself to me through Robert Service's biography of Stalin and my other studies of brutal but great men. Rance is unironically one of the pieces of the puzzle to see the Father when pieced together, as are the brutal, outward, violent folks of the Iliad. Now, the Spirit is especially deducible with Hegel. To read the corpus of all philosophy, the is-ought problem, to read even godless texts, then to appreciate the order, glory, greatness, length, absolute scale of world, to sublate Aristotle's unmoved mover with Hegel's moved mover and the spirit is identifiable with supreme reason. Piece together the three pieces of the Father, the Son and the Spirit yet to be sanctified and you have the Holy spirit in a perfect Trinity that makes sense outside of sola scriptura. I was a hard-hearted New Atheist shitposter on youtube years back and now I am the ultimate Christf*g. Decidedly, my Christianity is the Christianity nearer to Omega. So Lord have mercy indeed, Amen.

ASOIAF is grimdark in the sense that it's violent and sexy and has a fairly grey view of human nature. But it's still a story with clearly defined heroes and villains; in that sense Martin operates in the mode of Shakespeare. What Bakker is doing is something far more bleak, disturbing, and less accessible to the general public. That's not a value judgement, they are just two very different authors.

I've always thought of Martin as a storyteller and Bakker as more of a tortured artist type.

That's because Martin's grimderp is a sorta ground zero (even though The Black Company was the first official grimderp series, but was far less popular and influential) so it isn't AS grim and dark as later series would become. But that is still up to each individual author to decide how violent or sexual they want to make their books. Excessive violence and sex isn't actually necessary at all for a story to be grimdark.

When people dis fantasy—mainstream readers and SF readers alike—they are almost always talking about one sub-genre of fantastic literature. They are talking about Tolkien, and Tolkien's innumerable heirs. Call it 'epic', or 'high', or 'genre' fantasy, this is what fantasy has come to mean. Which is misleading as well as unfortunate.

Tolkien is the wen on the arse of fantasy literature. His oeuvre is massive and contagious—you can't ignore it, so don't even try. The best you can do is consciously try to lance the boil. And there's a lot to dislike—his cod-Wagnerian pomposity, his boys-own-adventure glorying in war, his small-minded and reactionary love for hierarchical status-quos, his belief in absolute morality that blurs moral and political complexity. Tolkien's clichés—elves 'n' dwarfs 'n' magic rings—have spread like viruses. He wrote that the function of fantasy was 'consolation', thereby making it an article of policy that a fantasy writer should mollycoddle the reader.

That is a revolting idea, and one, thankfully, that plenty of fantasists have ignored. From the Surrealists through the pulps—via Mervyn Peake and Mikhael Bulgakov and Stefan Grabiński and Bruno Schulz and Michael Moorcock and M. John Harrison and I could go on—the best writers have used the fantastic aesthetic precisely to challenge, to alienate, to subvert and undermine expectations.

Of course I'm not saying that any fan of Tolkien is no friend of mine—that would cut my social circle considerably. Nor would I claim that it's impossible to write a good fantasy book with elves and dwarfs in it—Michael Swanwick's superb Iron Dragon's Daughter gives the lie to that. But given that the pleasure of fantasy is supposed to be in its limitless creativity, why not try to come up with some different themes, as well as unconventional monsters? Why not use fantasy to challenge social and aesthetic lies?

Thankfully, the alternative tradition of fantasy has never died. And it's getting stronger. Chris Wooding, Michael Swanwick, Mary Gentle, Paul di Filippo, Jeff VanderMeer, and many others, are all producing works based on fantasy's radicalism. Where traditional fantasy has been rural and bucolic, this is often urban, and frequently brutal. Characters are more than cardboard cutouts, and they're not defined by race or sex. Things are gritty and tricky, just as in real life. This is fantasy not as comfort-food, but as challenge.

The critic Gabe Chouinard has said that we're entering a new period, a renaissance in the creative radicalism of fantasy that hasn't been seen since the New Wave of the sixties and seventies, and in echo of which he has christened the Next Wave. I don't know if he's right, but I'm excited. This is a radical literature. It's the literature we most deserve.

You don't have to watch the whole thing, but just look at the sheer amount of shit that these people (which happen to be the biggest fantasy booktubers) are promoting. Check the video's description.

Only one or two series in there are worth reading.

It's also interesting to see that they seem to avoid certain authors altogether, for the sake of avoiding controversy.

Critiquing things is a very simple skill, just look up any semi-"deep" book or movie or whatever on youtube and there will be literally thousands of videos ranging from half an hour to an hour talking about how "deep" it is and making all sorts of smart sounding theories and observations (which is also very easy to do, if you really stretch it you can make fucking Blues Clues sound like a Shakespearean drama).
Of course actually making something is very different, writing isn't even a skill, it's a collection of dozens of skills all coming together into a well crafted work, you have to consider thousands of things and how they all interact with each other before you even type out your first sentence. Just doing some autistic "world building," coming up with the most basic poorly thought out story you can with one note characters and immediately jumping in is pretty much guaranteed you're gonna end up with shit.

>> No.18998653

>>18998414
World building should emerge out of the story and enhance the experience by making the world feel vast, mysterious, and detailed. This is not accomplished by dumping massive paragraphs of exposition on the reader or forcing them to listen to lectures from all-knowing explainer characters. These serve mostly to remove all mystery from the setting and take the reader out of what's happening. I can remember the last book I read that did this, it was Malice by John Gwynne. Not even a quarter into the first book and he couldn't resist blowing his exposition load all over my face like a rude cunt.

Tad Williams does it pretty well I think. His stories are very languid, slow to build up, but very grounded in the experience of the characters. When you learn about his worlds you do it from the perspective of characters, and this colors your understanding of things. In some cases you get only fragments of information, or conflicting information, and it leads to speculation and genuine curiosity. I actually drew a relationship web while reading Shadowmarch to try and work out which mythological names referred to which deities in the 3 different scriptures. Mystery is the key, I think. Anything that can make you intensely curious has done a good job. Early Wheel of Time did that for me too, but unfortunately the payoff wasn't as good as Tad Williams' books.

This is amazing. Is this hosted online somewhere? Is there more? I was thinking about doing something similar.

I just got finished re-reading The Shadow Rising, and I came here to gush about it. It's so good, even on a third read. Maybe better now, because when I first began reading, my comprehension level was pretty low. I found it difficult to follow the undertones of the plot. But now that I have more experience under my belt, I was able to follow everything going on. So now I appreciate the book even more.

Also, this chart proves something that I was thinking. That Nynaeve's braid tugging really goes up in Book 4. I don't even recall it in the first three books. But it stood out in the 4th. This chart proves it.

You should include sniffing, and being given "a start" and "Fool man!"

This isn't how I wanted my time reading Dune to end, but I knew that this would the most likely outcome. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to connect with this final book at all. There were bright spots in the darkness, but they were far and few between. Overall I just couldn't be interested, invested, or care. Fortunately, this doesn't detract from how I feel about the first four books. There's nothing else I have to say.
