if it's public speaking, get a public speaking textbook for ideas (actually, Cicero's De Oratoria is quite good too), but the only way you'll actually improve is to practice and perform in person in front of real people.

Just ask them questions about things they like to talk about. They will never dislike you for that and it solves the problem of awkward silence without making you speak too much.
