Any good books about history and theory of jazz music?

I've been listening to Jazz recently. Upbeat Jazz is actually great to listen to when you're walking around if you suffer with anxiety.

The Jazz Piano Book (Levine)
From Bach to Bebop
Lydian Chromatic Concept of Tonal Organisation
Study charts of standards and transcriptions
Jazz is largely an aural tradition, listening, imitating, and improvising based upon your understanding of a given jazz dialect will deepen your understanding much more than reading books on theory - assuming a basic grasp of the constituent elements of the language.
Reading is a great way to learn about structures, development, "what's going on" etc. It will be worth little if you don't make concerted efforts to assimilate new theoretical knowledge into your playing in a manner that allows you to apply it fluently.

A book called The Monk Reader has a lot of good stuff in it (about Thelonious, that is), though not about the theory of jazz music, per se. Unusually readable for such a compilation; the editing is tight and well-done.

It has some older reviews and articles - from the 40s and 50s - that really capture the feel and mood of that period, thus representing a form of history.

Likewise Art Pepper's autobiography, which has all those virtues and is a very good read.

Haven't read it or watched it, but there's also the Ken Burns' Jazz series and accompanying book.
