One of the few good books written in Dutch. Otherwise Dutch literature is, by and large, one of abject spiritual and emotional poverty, much like the country it sprang from.

The Dutch seem like a hardy people charged with the Sisyphean task of pushing back the sea. Is there any books based on this?

You'd think there would be but none come to mind. Most Dutch literature is mostly either navel-gazing tripe about the aftermath of WWII or an endless reiteration of the same autobiographical counterculture degeneracy from the '60s. Then once in a while you have some pseuds like Mulisch or more recently, Buwalda trying to write a maximalist novel.
